They were out boating with a wonderful group of Caleb’s friends. We are heartsick, devastated, and shocked by John’s life being cut short so quickly and far too soon. His sudden departure has left us with a 6’2” hole in our hearts. It is hard to imagine a life without John, but we are finding solace in knowing that he lived his life with passion. John did nothing "halfway" and he was never afraid to try new things or go against the grain. He was a deep thinker who had an artistic eye and a creator's soul that he poured into his commercial and residential development projects. John loved building something from nothing and creating functional and beautiful spaces for others to enjoy. His objective was not to make a living, but to make people happy and lifelong friends. A legacy that John leaves to his children is one of knowing that you can achieve your goals by working hard and never giving up.
John loved and was dedicated to his family, friends, work, and the outdoors. Every chance he got, he would be outside with his wife and kids surfing and skiing. John craved spontaneity and lived life to the fullest, and his zest for life was felt by all who knew him. Everybody loved John and everybody was his "best friend" because that is how he made you feel. With a winning smile and magnetic charisma, John befriended all and looked for the best in everyone he met.
John and his wife of 26 years, Brynnly, grew up on the same street and knew each other from age five. They loved and anchored each other through storms and sunshine while living in Utah and Hawaii. Together, they were raising three amazing children with whom they shared a love and passion for fun, travel, and adventure. This shared love has been, and will continue to be, a strengthening bond for their family.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Marjean & Jay. His surviving loved ones include his wife Brynnly, and children Caleb, Marissa, and Miles – as well as his loving siblings, in-laws, nephews, and nieces. The entire family is so grateful for and humbled by all of the love and support provided to them by friends, neighbors, and coworkers during this difficult time. Thank you.
On Saturday, August 29, following a private graveside service at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, we are having an outdoor "Celebration of Life" gathering for ALL who knew and loved John. This celebration will be held from 3 -5 pm at the Mt. Olympus Ballpark field and pavilion located immediately north of the new baseball diamond at Skyline High School (3251 E. 3760 S, SLC). As John would have wanted it, this gathering will be an informal, come and go affair. We know there will be tears, but we are hoping for lots of smiles and laughter too. Please come help us love, remember, and honor a man larger than life. Out of consideration for all family, friends, and the community, we request that everyone keep healthy and happy by physically distancing and wearing a mask; hand sanitizer will be available on site.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring John by contributing to the link below for donation to heart related medical research OR support your favorite local restaurant. John made a point to patronize his favorites and tip generously during these hard times and we invite you to do the same.
