John Lloyd Stohl

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He filled every room with warmth, quiet confidence, and a steady devotion to family, faith, patients, and community.

John was born August 30th, 1939, to Lloyd and Mary Stohl. He was the second of two children. John grew up in Salt Lake City, and as a child he loved sports and being outdoors, especially baseball. John attended East High School, where he continued to excel on the baseball diamond as a pitcher, and on the football field as a running back. His baseball talent earned him a scholarship offer to Stanford University to pitch at the collegiate level, a point of pride he carried throughout his life. He turned down the scholarship, accepting a call to serve a full-time mission to the Swiss Austria mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While serving, he grew to love the people of Switzerland and Austria, the culture, and the German language. He was a devoted member of the church for the rest of his life. Following his mission, John continued his studies at the University of Utah, where he was a proud member of Sigma Chi fraternity, where he formed strong bonds of friendship. After earning his undergraduate degree, John continued his education at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He then returned home to Utah to begin his career.

For decades, John cared for generations of families at Foothill Dental in Salt Lake City. He was known for his gentle chair-side manner and meticulous clinical standards. He built a practice defined by trust and long-lasting relationships. Following in his path, all four of Johns sons attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry proudly continuing the legacy their father began.

Of all John’s accomplishments, none meant more to him than being a husband, father, and grandfather. He delighted in family gatherings, grandkids’ milestones, and the simple joy of time together. John married Alice Richards in 1965, and together they share six children and 32 grandchildren. They later divorced. In 2003, John married Lana Spivey, and they have shared 22 wonderful years together where they enjoyed similar interests, common friends and love of family. One cherished tradition was their Newport Beach family reunion, which consisted of the beach, many rounds of golf, Thrifty ice cream runs and dinners at the pool. It was important to John that his family gathered to make memories and connections.

Sports remained a lifelong love for John. He followed local teams and looked forward to knowing when the next ball game was. BYU was clearly John’s favorite. He enjoyed playing tennis and later in life, developed a passion for golf. One of John’s favorite things to do was spend his summer nights with his wife Lana playing 9 holes at The Country Club. The Country Club membership resulted in many lifelong friendships.

In his later years, John spent winters in his home in Palm Desert golfing with Lana. When he wasn’t on the golf course, John filled his time at the local elementary school, where he volunteered helping disadvantaged first graders learn to read. He specifically picked first grade to honor his mother’s long career as a first-grade teacher. In 2025 John was recognized as volunteer of the year for the Read with Me program in Coachella, CA. The children adored Mr. John and looked forward to their weekly sessions.

John was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Mary Stohl, sister Eleanor (Squires) Poelman, and granddaughters Katie and Ellie Stohl.

He is survived by the love of his life Lana, his six children and their spouses; Amy (Shaun) Greene, John (Jana), David (Nicole), Sarah (Eric) Blamires, Matt (Kim), Mike (Megan); thirty grandchildren; sisters-in-laws Linda (David) Gaddie, Teresa Petty, Tammy (Doug) Graham; brother-in-law Russell (Vivian) Lambert.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 6-8 PM at 1320 S. Wasatch Drive. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM with a viewing from 10:00-10:45 AM at 1320 S. Wasatch Drive. Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
