Alan Lloyd Metcalf (Al, Big Al, Uncle Al, Grampa Al) is a smile we all carry with us. He passed suddenly on June 18 and left the kind of giant hole in our lives that only time and laughter will fill. In our memories, Alan is joy and fun and grilling a steak and golf and hunting and fishing and so much more. Relatives and friends across the country remember him for the delight he brought to every occasion.
A Salt Lake City native, he graduated Skyline High School and attended the University of Utah. He married Ruth Ann Metcalf (Garside) in 1971 and became dad to two sons, Michael and Chris.
Alan lived in Texas and Oklahoma for two decades before returning home to be near his mother and family in 1996. A noted construction and estimating expert, his skilled work can be found in hundreds of buildings and houses throughout Utah and across the nation.
Alan was the eldest son of Lloyd and Marjorie Metcalf. He is survived by his sisters Marlene Hyte and Patricia Waddoups, brother Jon Metcalf, sons Michael and Christopher Metcalf, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Joseph Metcalf. He and Jon's wonderful dog Sam passed earlier this year. Al loved that dog.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday June 26, visitation an hour prior, at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Graveside Services and Reception to follow.
