Joy passed away July 30, 2023. She was born October 07, 1941 in Ogden, Utah to Joy B. Smith and Doris M. Gillespie. She graduated from South High School in 1959. She married James R. Patterson May 7, 1960 and had two children. In 1978 Joy opened “The Craft Center” in Murray, Utah. After many years in business, they moved to their current location in Cottonwood Heights and started specializing in cross-stitch. Along with her daughter in law, Jamie, they created a cozy and inviting place for stitchers to come and spend the day together; many friendships were formed here. Even as Joy’s health declined, she still enjoyed her Friday visits to the store. Joy loved stitching, but her true love was her grandkids and great grandkids. All four grandkids were raised at the craft store and have fond memories of picnics in the parking lot, trips to McDonalds, setting booby traps, and building forts out of the furniture. The grandkids also enjoyed the treats she kept in her drawer at her home: licorice, seasonal Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Jolly Ranchers, and Peanut M&M’s. Joy loved gambling, The Utah Jazz, Canasta, Yahtzee and Tetris. Her music of choice was Toby Keith until the feud with the Dixie Chicks, then her favorite was Alan Jackson.
Joy is survived by her children Todd (Jamie) Patterson, Traci (John) McCormick; grandchildren Taylor (Holly) Patterson, Tanner Patterson, Lauren (Clay) McCardell, Lexie (Logan) Wongsuwan; Great Grandchildren James, Bennett, & Carter Patterson and Beckham McCardell. Preceded in death by her husband Jim and two siblings Brent and Karen.
A private celebration of life will be held for family & close friends.
