Julianne Rutter Housecroft Card fought the effects of dementia and a recurrent cancer with dignity and humor and passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on July 25th 2024. Julie was born December 2nd 1935 in Salt Lake City to Maurice Housecroft and Lillian Rutter. In her youth she discovered a love of animals which she carried with her all her life. She had a special gift working with and helping to heal creatures of every kind.
Julie graduated from Granite High School in 1953. She attended the University of Utah for three years developing a love of the arts, taking particular interest in ceramics. While attending the U, she was a member of Lambda Delta Sigma and became involved in SOCOTWA, or the South Cottonwood Ward river rafting group. She went on numerous rafting trips down the Colorado and other rivers prior to the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. It was on these adventures that she got to know and ultimately married Douglas Richards Card in the Salt Lake Temple, August 2nd, 1956. Doug’s work took them to California where she lived for over 40 years. Julie worked in a medical lab in the Salt Lake City Holy Cross Hospital. After moving to California she was an assistant to her brother-in-law Robert Carlisle and Homer Howell, both ophthalmologists. Julie took great pride in knowing every patient by name and would greet them enthusiastically as they came through the door. Doug and Julie became the parents of a daughter, Ann, in May of 1966. Julie and Doug parted ways in 1982 and divorced in 1986. Julie found companionship with Irving Tjomsland, living in Sun Valley Idaho for several years.
Her pastimes included bowling, tennis, golf, skiing, bridge, needlework, knitting and she became a fine seamstress. Julie loved adventure and mystery novels, reading hundreds over the years. She compassionately cared for her beloved aunt Romania Hadfield in Romie’s final year. Her favorite activity was doting on her grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately refer to her as “Gram”. Julie was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Carlisle (Robert) and Irving Tjomsland. She is survived by her former spouse Doug Card (Lianne), daughter Ann Weaver (John), grandchildren Hannah Baldwin (Jack), Maggie Shearer (Joey), Riley Weaver (Isabelle), Sam Weaver and great grandchildren Nolan and Wolfgang Shearer and Piers Baldwin.
We wish to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Highland Glen and Serenity Hospice and her prior care to her oncologist Dr. Thompson. As per her wishes there will be a brief graveside service at Wasatch Lawn Memorial 3401 S. Highland Dr. Millcreek Utah at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 3rd of August, 2024.
