Loren Lee Burns

Loren (Buzz), 87, passed away peacefully Thursday March 30, 2023 in the presence of his family after battling a long illness. He was born in South St. Paul, Minnesota on September 6, 1935 to Arthur and Ardis Birnstengel.

Buzz graduated from Humboldt High School in South St. Paul. In 1956 he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he achieved awards for excellent marksmanship. From his military service he realized life owed him nothing, and if you expect to have anything, you must work hard to earn it.

After the Marine Corps he met the love of his life Judy. They were married September 30, 1961 in St. Paul. Shortly thereafter he became a claims adjuster with Farmers Insurance where he was employed 34 years. In 1975, he moved his family from Minnesota to Utah for a promotion to claims supervisor. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to Branch Claims Manager where he excelled for 20 years before he retired in 1999. He was highly regarded by his coworkers.

Buzz was passionate about Hockey. Some in the local Hockey community said his coaching was legendary. He also volunteered in the 2002 Olympics as a hockey statistician, where a highlight was serving in the gold medal game. He loved rebuilding cars and kept family in low mileage like new vehicles. He was an amazing cook who was especially known for his grilled cheese sandwiches, baked beans, gravy and flavorful meat dishes.

Buzz was a loving and dependable husband and family man who never let us down. He was very humble and never desired fanfare. His wisdom provided valuable teaching moments to his last days. Our loving husband and father will be dearly missed. He was a Christian and we look forward to rejoicing with him in heaven.

He is survived by his wife Judy, sons Lee, Joel (Pam), Larry (Amy), sister Beverly, grandchildren Bobby, Blake (Joanna), Brooke and Sierra, great grandchildren Amelia and Berlin. He was preceded in death by brothers Art and Richard.

A private graveside service was held for family on April 6, 2023 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Gardens.
