Phyllis Lynn Ray Lyons, 87, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021, after succumbing to a long fight with COPD and heart disease. Lynn, as she liked to be called, was born in Los Angeles, California, to Lynn David Ray and Melba Alice Bracken, on May 29, 1934. She grew up in the Los Angeles area. When she was young, she enjoyed playing baseball and volleyball (her team winning first out of 40 teams to win a tournament). She graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1952.
She married Kenneth Edward James on February 14, 1957, and they had one daughter, Julie, together. Ken and Lynn divorced in 1959. She married Earl Thomas Lyons on December 19, 1964, in Lost Angeles. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had two children together: Vicki Lynn Lyons and Earl Thomas Lyons II. The family moved to Escondido, California, in 1971. She and Earl were divorced in 1988. She followed Julie in moving to Utah in 1993, moving into their home with them in 1995. She lived with them until her death, on July 14, 2021, bringing an added richness to their lives.
Lynn worked in doctors' offices and hospitals doing medical transcription and front office work for 50 years. She had many hobbies and interests, including dancing, sewing, quilting, paper crafting, ceramics, tole painting, genealogy, scrapbooking, and reading. She supported her children and grandchildren in their various activities and served faithfully in her church, including as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her three children, Julie (Dallas) Shaw, Vicki Martin, Earl (Alicia) Lyons; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. They will all miss her dearly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lynn David Ray and Melba Alice Bracken.
Lynn left a great legacy for her posterity. She taught about hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, love, helping others, and the importance of family by the way she lived. Despite the challenges that life presented to her, including living through The Great Depression and World War II, being a single mom, and having many health issues for much of her life, Lynn kept a positive attitude and sense of humor through it all.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Western Springs 2nd Ward Chapel in Riverton, Utah, at 11:00am, with a viewing to be held the night before, from 6:00 to 8:00pm, and that morning at 10:00am.
