14, 2021; in the comfort of her own home, in Sandy, Utah.
Mary Ann was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 10, 1933 to her parents Vern Winter
Rodgers and Johanna Elizabeth (Bessie) DeKarver Rodgers. Mary Ann was the youngest child
in the family, with older siblings Jack Rodgers and Gerry (Rodgers) Larsen.
She attended East High School and after graduating early, attended the Dental Nurses Training
School in San Francisco. She had a long and successful career in Dental Assisting and served
as the secretary and treasurer of the Utah Association of Dental Assistants.
She married her high school sweetheart, and husband of 62 years, John (Jack) Clifton Brown in
the Salt Lake Temple on June 8, 1955, officiated by LeGrand Richards. Together they lived life
and raised a family in the Salt Lake area, with a short residency in Montana.
As a young couple they were blessed with three adopted children who grew up locally and now
have families of their own; creating an additional blessing of five grandchildren and two great
grandchildren, so far! The children and families are as follows, in birth order:
Daughter - Lori Clifton (Ed) of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Star Williams and Sky Williams, also of Fort
Smith.
Son - Brad Brown of South Jordan, Utah; Katie Brown of Redlands, California
Daughter - Jenny Smith (Dave); Tim Smith (Kori) of North Salt Lake and Johanna Smith of
Melbourne, Florida
Mary Ann was of the LDS faith and served in many capacities within the Church; she served in
the Primary program and Relief Society as a teacher and visiting teacher. She served the
Canyon Creek Assisted Living Community with her husband Jack, Branch President. Jack and
Mary Ann also served a mission together in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 1988 - 1989. Most
recently she was an active member of the Midvalley 5th Ward.
She enjoyed travel and she and Jack had the opportunity to travel to Europe and extensively
throughout the United States, many times in the comfort of one of their RVs. They also had a
beautiful cabin, built on the shore of Henry’s Lake, just outside of Yellowstone, where they spent
many happy seasons fishing, snowmobiling, and just relaxing with friends and family.
Mary Ann loved spending time with her grandkids, working in her yard, shopping, playing
games, and Christmas. She loved fishing and was pretty competitive at it! She especially loved
Chocolate, in any shape or form, and the more the better! She adored her dogs and left her
latest companion, Buddy, her schnauzer, still watchful and longing for his “Mama’s” return home.
Toward the end of her life, Mary Ann was able to remain at home and received excellent care
from Visiting Angels - a special thanks to her caregiver Trina Anderson; truly an angel who Mom
considered her very best friend! Tender Care Hospice was also a huge support - thank you
Debbie Arnold, RN for your loving care and friendship!
We miss you dear Mom and Grandma, but we know that you’re good now, better than ever! We
will love you always and hold you close in our hearts forever! Until we meet again...
Mary Ann’s memorial service will take place graveside on Friday, March 19th at 1:00 p.m. at the
Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park; S. Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. Friends may visit with the
family Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
