Mary Kershaw Adams Warren Brewer, 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 8, 2016 - a date that is significant as the 69th anniversary (Aug. 8, 1947) of her marriage to the love of her life, Calvin Leo Warren, and the 52nd anniversary (Aug. 8, 1964) of his passing.
Born on August 17, 1925 to Delbert Hyrum Adams and Sarah Ruth Kershaw, Mary was the sixth of ten children and grew up in Layton, Utah. Mary was popular and outgoing, easily making friends wherever she went. Mary and Cal met at North Davis Junior High School, where they were members of the first graduating class. They graduated from Davis High School in 1943 and attended the University of Utah where Mary joined the Chi Omega sorority. Two months after graduation from the U, Mary and Cal were married. Mary worked as an elementary school teacher before becoming the mother to six children: five sons and one daughter. Mary and Cal enjoyed the good life, socializing with friends and traveling frequently, often with their many children in tow until Cal passed at the age of 39. Mary eventually began a second career as a Realtor, which suited her innate people skills and affable demeanor. In 1977, Mary married Bob Brewer, and they enjoyed many good years playing golf and traveling before divorcing in 1994. Mary was active in Assistance League and spent many hours volunteering in the organization's thrift shop. Mary's greatest role was mother and grandmother to an ever-changing family that evolved throughout the years via marriage, divorce and death. Through this process, she "inherited" more children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, each one feeling loved and welcome in her home. In addition to family, Mary's passions included decorating her home for every holiday - especially Christmas, attending the symphony and the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her love of daisies, gardening, chocolate, the color yellow and turquoise jewelry, as well as for her warm hospitality and keen sense of humor. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; eight siblings; husbands, Calvin and Bob; and two sons, Calvin and Matthew. She is survived by her sister, Josie VanFleet; special niece, Ellen Averett; and children, Scott "Baylor" Warren, Jon Warren, Clark (Melissa) Warren, Sarah Jane (Steve) Knous; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassion and special care Mary received during her last years from devoted neighbor Emma Lou Ward, adopted "daughter-in-law" LaVon Marshall and exceptional caregiver Mary Schneider.
Services are Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11 a.m., First Unitarian Church, 569 S 1300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84102. An open house at the church will follow the service. Burial is private.
