

Mrs. Mary Shepherd Caffee passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in Gaithersburg, MD, at the age of 93. Mary Caffee (nee Mary Edythe Shepherd) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 5th, 1920, the youngest child of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Shepherd. Mary attended East High in Salt Lake, and graduated with honors from the University of Utah in 1941. She later received an MA from NYU. During World War II, Mary worked for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington, D.C. In 1944, she married Franklin Brockway Caffee (Brock), of Berkeley, California. They were married for 68 years, when Brock died in January 2012, at the age of 94. The couple initially settled in Long Island, NY, where all four of their children were born. In 1962, they moved to Bethesda, MD, where Brock worked as a sociologist for HEW. Mary was a kind, creative and loving mother to their four children. While they were young, Mary taught nursery school in the Montgomery County "Creative Carousel" program. She later went back to full-time work as benefits administrator at the David Taylor Naval R&D Center. Her final job was as a Blood Mobile coordinator for the American Red Cross. The Caffees moved to the Asbury retirement community in Gaithersburg, MD, where Mary was active in various tenant association committees and local literacy programs. She was a talented artist and was still painting at the age of 93. Mary was a lifelong member and faithful servant of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). She is survived by her four loving children, Claudia Caffee-Delapp, Mary Christine Caffee, David Brockway Caffee and Karen Caffee-Grace, and their families, including five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11:00am on 5/17/14 at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery Chapel, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. All family and friends are invited to attend.
