Pat, the fourth of nine children, was born May 14, 1935 to Richard Bernell McAllister and LuZene Wilkinson McAllister in Logan, Utah. The family moved a lot during Pat’s younger years, but they eventually settled down on Murphy’s Lane in Salt Lake City, Utah where Pat attended Granite High School. Pat skipped the 12th grade to attend the University of Utah on a Ford Foundation Scholarship. To augment his scholarships, Pat sold welding machines; labored as a carpenter, and concrete contractor; and worked as a chemist to provide for his young family and pay for his education. Pat studied Ceramic Engineering and Mathematics and ultimately earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering in 1970. After graduation he worked in the aerospace industry at Sperry Rand, Thiokol, and Hercules Inc. He served in the Army Reserves.
Pat married MaryLou Chamberlain in the Salt Lake Temple, July 2, 1954. Together, they raised their six sons and two daughters in the home they built on Lorraine Drive in Salt Lake City. Pat and MaryLou considered it a privilege to host two Indian Placement students, one of which they supported, as they had each of their six sons, on a full-time mission. Pat and MaryLou enjoyed 69 happy years of marriage and look forward to spending eternity together. They are proud of their posterity (40 grandchildren and currently 63 great grandchildren) through which they derive their greatest pleasure and satisfaction.
A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pat served as a Bishop, High Councilor, Stake Executive Secretary, Elders Quorum President, Scout Master, and Cub Master. Pat was known for his ingenuity, generosity, welcoming nature, joke telling, and physical and spiritual strength. He enjoyed camping, hiking, Dutch oven cooking, singing around the campfire, boating, fishing, and hunting. Pat especially loved his off-road motorcycles and enjoyed ATVs and giving sledding rides to the grandchildren. He excelled at playing chess. After retirement, he built a home in Hatch, Utah which was the center of recreation for the extended family for many years.
Pat is survived by his wife, MaryLou McAllister; seven children: Von (Jeannette), Doug (Mai), Bruce (Reva), Brad (Kristin), Susan (Ben Black), Calvin (Cindy), and Peggy (Martin Arterburn); Indian Placement children: “Junior” Tom Henry Lansing and Leonard Begay; and siblings: Dick, Robin, and Karl.
