1928 ~ 2010
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, age 82, passed away peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City, UT on November 11, 2010.
Ramona was born 9/2/1928 in Duchesne, UT to Martin and Nellie Curtis. She grew up in the Uinta Basin spending many special moments with parents, aunts and uncles in Vernal and Roosevelt, UT. She loved the ranch life, working the fields and riding horses. After moving with her parents, sister and brother from the Uinta Basin to Provo, Ramona attended all schools there and briefly attended BYU. Ramona met Harold Ray Holmes and they were married in Las Vegas, NV in 1949. They lived in several Military Air Force bases while Harold served as a co-pilot of a B-29 with the United States Air Force. They had two boys together before 1st Lt. Holmes’ plane was shot down over North Korea on June 10, 1952.
After the tragic death of her first husband, Ramona settled in the Provo, UT area raising her two boys, David and Hal. She faced many hardships but was able to provide a supportive, loving home for her sons.
She met her second husband, James G. McCall, and they started a new life together with a wedding in Elko, NV in 1962. Jim who worked for Geneva Steel was soon transferred to US Steel Gary Works in Indiana. Together they and their boys started a new life on the shores of Lake Michigan and were blessed with a beautiful baby daughter, Sydney. They all enjoyed their life together on the beaches of Lake Michigan.
In 1979 Ramona returned to her home of Utah. She worked for Salt Lake County as a Pre-trial Court Liaison and retired in 1995. She always strived to help those who were troubled or less fortunate than herself. This was a beautiful trait special to Ramona.
Ramona was a true friend to all who knew her. She nurtured her friendships and welcomed new friends into her heart. She stayed close to some of her childhood girlfriends and all of her family. Once Ramona was your friend, you had a loyal friend for life. She made everyone around her feel comfortable with her warmth and her devilish laugh. We all have fond memories of Ramona’s story telling around her kitchen table.
She loved her family, friends, house, talking on the phone, and attending to her vegetable and flower gardens. Ramona was a life-long active member in BPOE of UT.
Ramona is survived by her husband Jim; her three children, David (Carol), Kent, Washington; Hal (Barbara Mall), Bozeman, MT; Sydney Rapaport (Al), West Melbourne, FL; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Being a Utah native, Ramona has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors, all of whom are blessed by knowing her.
Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Patry L. Curtis, and her sister Berta Curtis Vittier.
A memorial service will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, SLC, UT.
