Even in her advanced years, she could light up any room she entered. Raquel was born to Joel and Betty Olsen, and was named after her great-aunt who was the Silent Film actress, Raquel Torres.
Always a tomboy, Raquel spent more time outside than in, and loved her summer trips to Stanley, Idaho, where her father prospected in several mines. She had many stories of exploring with her younger sister, Stephanie, and younger brother, Stanley.
When Raquel was 10 her family moved to Boise, Idaho, where she later met her future husband, Chuck. Chuck always said Raquel was the "prettiest girl I ever saw." They got married and moved to Salt Lake when Raquel was 17, and were married for 66 years. After having three girls, Raquel got her GED and then her Associates Degree in Nursing from BYU, and her B.S Degree in Nursing from the University of Utah.
Raquel was nurturing and not easily intimidated, and unconditionally loved Chuck. She had many close friends in Salt Lake to play bridge or go skiing.
After Chuck retired from Kennecott, they moved to Buhl, Idaho in 2001, and Raquel and Chuck met some of their best friends there, including Jani and Larry Shark. In Idaho, Raquel was able to pursue some of her favorite hobbies, including sewing, painting, knitting, golfing, volunteering and gardening.
Raquel is preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, who is no doubt waiting for her, her parents Joel and Betty, and her brother Stanley. She is survived by her sister, Stephanie, her sister-in-law Betsy, her three daughters JoLynda, Kelli (Bob) and Mimi (Chris), her grandchildren Molly, Kathryn, Jon, Mykala, Travis, and Jordan, and great-grandchildren Evalyn, Corson, and (arriving soon) Emma Rose.
We are eternally grateful for the loving care that Raquel had from the incredible Sunrise of Sandy memory care staff. They showed such love and tenderness in caring for our Mom. You all are what Compassion means.
Raquel always signed off the phone or visit with "I love you, honey" and we know that she and Chuck are together again. We are so lucky to have had this strong and loving role model in our lives.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City.
