

Our loving mother and grandmother, Ruby Erskine Steel, passed away peacefully at CareSource hospice care facility, on March 31, 2014. Ruby was 90 years old at the time of her passing. She was born on October 12, 1923 in Burley, Idaho, to William Henry and Mary Elmina Gibson.
On April 16, 1949 Ruby married Jasper Newton Erskine. Ruby and Jay were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple and had their children sealed to them.
Jay passed away on May 9, 1982. A year and a half after Jay's death Ruby married John Herman Steele on December 22, 1983.
Ruby graduated from high school in Burley, Idaho in May 1942. That year her family moved to Salt Lake City and would begin a new chapter in her life that would be filled with many wonderful friends and experiences.
When she married Jay, they lived in California, Tennessee, Virginia, Germany, Texas, Utah, Japan, and then when Jay retired from the Army they settled down in Holladay Utah. Through their years of traveling around the world, Ruby made a point of learning how to cook dishes from each place they lived in. When back in Utah she used her cooking talent by teaching international cooking classes for many years. After she stopped teaching her cooking classes, she kept sharing her talent by preparing meals for others whenever she could find the opportunity. Her cooking talent led her to be a guest lecture at the University of Utah and at BYU Provo.
She has been active in the LDS church are entire life. She always mentioned how many years she spent as a leader in the Mutual Improvement Association (mutual), and how much she loved working with the youth.
While Ruby and John were married they served in the Illinois Peoria mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. They served for one and a half years, completing their mission in January 1989. They were called back to serve from June 1989 to February 1, 1990, and then again from July 1, 1992 December 1, 1990.
Ruby served as a part-time hostess for 36 months as a church service missionary for the church public affairs department, starting on June 28, 1993.
Ruby is survived by her brother Lawrence Dwayne Gibson, her son Scott Erskine (Denise), her daughter Diane Derr (Lonny), five stepchildren, Patricia Culverwell (Ronald), John Michael Steele, Margaret Wheelwright (Steven), Diane Austin (DeMeade), Richard H. Steele (Patty); 23 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, five sisters,son Dann T. Erskine, her first husband Jay, and her second husband John.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 11 AM. At the Holladay S. Stake Center, 4917 South Viewmont St. (2085 East), Holladay, Utah. A viewing will be held Monday evening on April 7, 2014 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, UT, and Tuesday morning for one hour prior to the services at the Holladay S. Stake Center.
