Suzanne Curtis was born on July 2nd, 1947, as Susan Ann Martin, to John C. and Jean W. Martin in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was released to the tender care of our Savior on October 20th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was one of two daughters in the Martin family, the other being her beloved sister, Sandra. She was married to her sweetheart Thomas Ray Curtis on August 30th, 1966, in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together they were blessed with six children: Thomas Jr. (Stacie), Stephanie (Todd Adams), Rebecca, Alexander (Jenny), Chris (Holly), and Jesse (Melinda). She is the proud Nana of 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandsons.
She graduated from Skyline High School, attended the University of Utah, received an Associate's Degree from Salt Lake Community College, and earned her Barbering and Cosmetology certification. She was formally recognized for her teaching excellence. Her interests included boating, horses, quilting, camping, and traveling.
Her children were all established in school before she completed her education. She began her 25-year career as adjunct faculty at Salt Lake Community College and retired as the Department Chair of Barbering and Cosmetology. Mentoring came naturally to her, and she was loved and admired by students, colleagues, and clients alike.
She was an unwavering mother in her devotion to her family, known for her loving care and spotless home. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends traveling the world, basking before a campfire, or just playing games around the kitchen table. Mom attended her children’s and grandchildren’s many sporting and performance events, including baseball, soccer, softball, football, wrestling, dancing, track, lacrosse, 4H, and music recitals.
Always anxiously engaged, she served at ward and stake levels in Relief Society, Young Women’s, and Primary. She faithfully served as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River and Nauvoo Temples. She never needed a calling to serve a neighbor or friend. She and Tom completed two missions in Salt Lake Inner City and one in the Nauvoo Illinois Temple. Their last mission to Heber Valley Girls Camp was interrupted by her onset of Parkinson’s Disease.
Her legacies were unrivaled cooking, unconditional love, bright hope, abiding faith, and a profound testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a family we will greatly miss this royal daughter of God.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, son Jesse, and infant great-grandson William Crowley.
A special thanks to Dignity Home Health & Hospice, especially Drea and Miranda, who went above and beyond their duties to make Suzanne comfortable in the final weeks of her life. Our family is grateful for expressions of love through word and deed from all her loved ones.
