On April 6, 2010 Tim Paine, loving Husband, Father, Brother and Uncle, passed away at his home as a result of complications from a 2-year illness with Brain Cancer.
Tim was born on June 9, 1954 in Pittsburgh, PA to Frederick and Barbara Paine. He was the second of 3 sons and if you know the Paine brothers, then you know there was not a lack of excitement, trouble or mischief. They proudly refer to their mother as “Saint Barbara”. Tim spent the first half of his childhood years growing up in rural Pittsburgh and then in Olympia Fields, IL, outside Chicago. He graduated from Rich Central High in 1972 where he excelled in track and basketball. Tim’s college experience began at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. But soon he heard about all of the wonderful snow in Utah and quickly joined his older brother Freddie and transferred to the University of Utah. Before long, their younger brother Scott was here and the Brothers Paine made Utah their new home. Tim graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and later completed his MBA.
Tim was a born leader and had a very successful and distinguished career with American Express, PageNet and most recently, eBay. There are many people who contribute their careers to Tim Paine saying that he gave them the chance they needed or he was the one who believed in them. It was true. Tim loved the people and that is what made him such an influential and respected leader to so many. His integrity, dedication and strong work ethic were unparalleled and you were a better person just for having known him. Oftentimes he was challenged to stand at the front doors of eBay to see if he could name each person coming into work. Not only did he know their name, but he could tell you a few personal things about them as well. Those were the things that set him apart from other leaders. He made significant contributions to each of these companies and left behind a legacy of valuable and loyal employees. He also had a strong sense of volunteer work. Tim spent countless hours giving of his time and money to several charities and organizations, most notably the National MS Society, where he served as the Utah Chapter President for many years.
Tim was an accomplished athlete and had a strong physical drive. He completed the MS 150 Bike Race 20 consecutive times, Lotoja (Logan to Jackson Hole) twice, several marathons and half marathons including Chicago, and countless triathlons over the years. He was disciplined and driven and nothing was going to stop him from reaching his goals. He had a wonderful way of inspiring and encouraging those around him to push themselves to find their own physical strength. One of his favorite events was pacing his cousin Karen each year on the Squaw Peak and Wasatch 100 Marathons. His true love, however was skiing. He was a long-time member of the Church of Alta where he held a season’s pass for more than 30 years. It was truly his “happy place” and nothing beat a day on the slopes with his brothers and good friends. Even if it did mean breaking trail for his buddy Lloyd. And whether it was a ski trip to Canada, camping and hiking in southern Utah or floating the Green River with his family and friends, Tim truly loved the outdoors and had a deep respect and appreciation for nature. His greatest accomplishment however was that of being a father. Nothing meant more to Tim than his daughters. He adored them and reveled in watching them learn, grow and experience life.
Tim is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Barbara Paine. He is survived by his beloved wife Julie, precious daughters Abby and Olivia, son Michael, brothers Freddie and Scott (Jane), nephew Manton and nieces Hailey and Alden. Tim was a remarkable man who touched the lives of countless people throughout his life. He will be remembered, honored and deeply missed by many.
A memorial service will be held April 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr. Visitation will be 1 hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in his name to the MS Society Utah Chapter or Friends of Alta. And if you just want to do something fun in the name of Tim Paine, ski the slopes at Alta or watch an episode of Top Gear on the BBC.
A special thanks to the wonderful team of administering angels from CNS Hospice who made such a difficult time for our family a very peaceful and beautiful experience.
