Vernal E. Edlund, 98, passed away March 6, 2018 of causes incident of age. Born in Murray City on July 31, 1919 to Eynar E. and Esther Edlund. Married Myra P. Tregeagle on July 16, 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 49 years until her death in 1999. Vern graduated from Granite High School in 1937 and enrolled in the University of Utah the same year. He was called up for active military duty on July 7, 1941 and served 5 years active duty as an officer in the 27 Infantry Division in the Central Pacific Theater of operations in World War II. He participated in the Gilbert, Marianas, and Okinawa invasions and commanded a field artillery battery at the end of the war. Upon release from active duty on March 23, 1946 he continued military service in the active Army Reserve, retiring April 1, 1968 with the rank of Major. In 1946 he returned to the University of Utah, continuing his education and graduating a Metallurgical Engineer in 1948. He was employed as an engineer with a rock bit company, then as a building contractor and ended his career at the U.S. Bureau of Mines engaged in metallurgical research. He retired in 1984. He enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid skier for over 60 years. He and Myra traveled extensively and particularly enjoyed fishing in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and New Zealand.
The family would like to thank his niece Laura for her loving care over the last ten years. Also they wish to thank the staff at The Abbington and Brighton Hospice.
Vernal was preceded in death by his wife Myra, his brother Marvin and niece Laura. He is survived by his nephews David, Thomas (Teresa), and Mark (Carrie).
Friends may call Tuesday, March 13 from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon at Wasatch Lawn.
