

Mammina, Joseph on November 20, 2014 of Summerfield, FL.. He is predeceased by parents: Ludovico & Katherine (nee Vaccaro) Mammina, by a brother Salvatore and a sister Josephine Venezia. Married for 71 years to Eleanor (nee Hoog). Children: Joseph (Linda), Wayne (Deanna), Deborah Heruth (Fred). Grandchildren: Joseph (Jennifer), Paul (Audra), David (Roseann), Laura Nicholson (Mark), Elizabeth Mammina, Adrienne Ellers (David), James Heruth (Ruth). Great-grandchildren: Anthony, Nicholas, Lindsey & Thomas Mammina, Lily & Daniel Nicholson, Michael & Joseph Ascierto, Alexander & Daniel Heruth. He enlisted in the US Navy during WW II, was stationed on the San Jacinto an aircraft carrier that was deployed in the Pacific. It was the same aircraft carrier that George H W Bush flew from, when he was shot down and stranded near Chi Chi Jima and later picked up by a submarine. He worked for Brookhaven National Lab.as a machinist. He was one of the original Rocky Point Fire Department members (Badge #34). He was past commander of the Fischer-Hewins VFW in Rocky Point. He grew in Manhattan, where he met the love of his life, a lovely German/Irish girl named Eleanor. She stole his heart and they married in 1943, after WW II, they lived in the Yorkville section of Manhatten. With their family growing, they moved to Rocky Point in 1948, which at the time was a fledgling summer community. They especially enjoyed the summers at the beautiful beaches that Rocky Point had to offer at that time. After retirement from BNL, he had a winter home in The Villages in Lady Lake FL. A few years ago he & his wife purchased a beautiful home in Summerfield, Fl. He wanted it large enough, so that his children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren would be able to visit. He was a good man, who loved his family and enjoyed life to the fullest. One of his favorite travel trips was to his Father's birthplace in Borgeta (Palermo Region of Sicily), Italy. Reposing at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, NY. Visitation on Friday, December 5th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass on December 6th at 10 AM at St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church. Interment to follow at Yaphank Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wounded Warriors.
