Richard J. Rizza, age 96, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather, and loyal friend, Richard lived a long and meaningful life rooted in dedication, generosity, and unwavering love for his family.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, Mildred “Millie” Rizza, with whom he recently celebrated 68 years of marriage. Together they built a beautiful life, raising three sons: Richard (Maddalena), Gerard, and Gregory. He was the proud grandfather of Daniella (Kris Halpern) and Jennifer (Martin Connell), and was joyfully awaiting the arrival of his first great-granddaughter in October.
He is also survived by his brothers, Michael and Joseph (Helen), and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is now reunited in peace with his brother Angelo, whom he held dear.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Trained as a surgical technician, he later took on the role of electrical maintenance supervisor—a responsibility he embraced with skill and dedication, earning a commendation from his division. He remained active in the American Legion and carried the spirit of service with him throughout his life.
After returning home from the war, Richard became a highly skilled electrician and a proud member of IBEW Local 3. His career spanned several decades and included work at Alexander’s Department Store, Abraham & Strauss, and finally, The New York Daily News.
Richard was a man of many interests. He enjoyed bocce, bowling, playing sudoku, and watching his beloved New York Yankees—witnessing 25 of their 27 World Series championships and attending two no-hitters in person at Yankee Stadium. He was also an avid traveler and especially treasured a 16-day trip to Italy in 2000 with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters, which included a special visit to Modica, Ragusa, Sicily—his parents’ hometown.
Family meant everything to Richard. Nothing brought him more happiness than gathering everyone around the table for Sunday dinner. He found deep satisfaction in caring for his loved ones and was always willing to lend a hand to friends and neighbors alike. Whether fixing a car engine, rewiring an appliance, or solving a home repair, Richard could take apart and repair just about anything—and he did it all without seeking anything in return.
He and Millie shared countless road trips together, including many to their favorite getaway spots: the Borgata in Atlantic City and a cherished bed and breakfast in Chatham, Cape Cod.
Richard’s life was defined by humility, craftsmanship, quiet strength, and an enduring love for family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he loved and the lives he touched.
