

Alvin Dwight Simonson, age 85, of Finlayson, MN passed away peacefully on October 5, 2013. He was the 6th child in a family of 12 and grew up on a dairy farm west of McGrath, MN. He graduated from McGrath HS in 1947 and joined the Air Force. He served for 3 years and was stationed in Okinawa for 16 months. From 1951 – 1958 he lived in Wichita, KS and worked on B-47s/B-52s for Boeing. He married Marlene “Peggy” Karsky in June 1952. In 1958 Alvin and his family moved back to MN and bought a farm by Giese, MN. He worked for Jesco Const Co in Mpls as a Labor Foreman until the fall of 1981, when he decided to take a job closer to home. Throughout his life, Alvin was strong in his faith, active in his church, local VFW and AAL. Education was also important to him, and he served on both the McGrath and Hinckley-Finlayson school boards for a combination of 20+ years. In 1996 he was honored at the State School Board Convention. He loved his family, deer hunting, fishing, watching MN sports teams, animals and working in the woods. His smile will forever live on in our hearts. He is survived by 3 sons: Dennis (Anita) of St Paul, Delvin (Janet) of St. Cloud; Chuck of Finlayson; 2 daughters: Gail (Tad) Gates of North Branch and Leah Olson of Mpls, 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. His celebration of life will be held at Kapala-Glodek Funeral Home 230 13th Ave NE, Mpls on Thursday, October 10 at 11:30am. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial to follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
