Art was born Nov 10, 1934 in Ramona, South Dakota to William and Agnes Sophia Koepp, the youngest of 6 children. He grew up on a farm in Madison and told many stories of his adventures there. When he was 8, his sister Ethel started a Sunday School class which he attended. It was there that he met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and started a lifelong journey with Jesus. He continued to attend church and it was there that he met The Farmer’s Daughter, Alice Petheram, who eventually became the love of his life. When asked if it was love at first sight, he would smile and say an emphatic no. They fought like cats and dogs at first. But while he was working for Alice’s dad, they fell in love and eventually married. And that began a lifelong love. They had their 5 beloved daughters, and a big house with only 1 bathroom, but a door that was always open to friends. And pets. Lots of pets.
Art made sure to send roses to Alice each year on their anniversary. He would add a rose each year. For their 25th anniversary he sent her 50 roses…25 red ones for the years they had spent together and 25 yellow ones for the years to come. God was gracious and gave them 61 years together.
Art and Alice led the Young at Hearts group at Oakwood Church for many years, having them in their home each week for Bible studies and a meal. Art retired from St Paul Companies, was a board member of Child Evangelism Fellowship, graduate of St Paul Bible College (Crown College) and a member of Toastmasters. After he retired from St Paul Companies he went on to start his own logging company, supplying firewood for a garden center in the Twin Cities.
After Alice’s death, Art moved to The Shores in Shoreview where he enjoyed many, many fun times with the residents. He almost never missed the weekly Wii bowling nights and could somehow almost always pick up the splits. It became his signature move. He loved putting puzzles together and would often surprise the residents with how quickly he could put these complicated puzzles together. But he always ended his time at the puzzle table in time to get back to his apartment to watch Bonanza! We girls knew better than to plan appointments or get togethers during the Bonanza hour. He would often tell us of the “latest” episode and what Little Joe and Hoss were up to that day. Art’s love of the MN Vikings was lifelong, and he passed that love to his daughters and grandchildren. He rarely ever missed watching a game. He always held out hope that one day they would win a Super Bowl. Skol!
Dad will be missed greatly. We are blessed to have been loved by a man who loved his Lord so deeply.
Art’s funeral will be held Thursday Feb 6, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Oakwood Church, 1388 Point Douglas Rd, St Paul, MN. A visitation will be held an hour before the funeral. Private interment at Sunset Cemetery.
