

Doug was a disciplined and meticulous man who enjoyed life's simple pleasures - his morning coffee, a good game of cribbage, and a slice of Danish kringle.
He is survived by his children, Dean (Leslie) Vatne, Jeanine (Scott) Haws, and Jennifer (Steve) Charbonnet; his brother, Bruce (Jacque) Vatne; his sisters, Sandy (Wing) and Linda (Literski); eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jan, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage, and by his brother Richard ("Dick").
Born October 20, 1932, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Doug was the son of Norwegian father Sverre Vatne and Swedish mother Emma Carlson. He grew up valuing hard work, family, and community, and graduated from South High School in 1950, where he played basketball and football and formed lifelong friendships.
Doug was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Jan took great pride in the family they raised and instilled the importance of supporting one another, a legacy that continues through their children and grandchildren.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1957, including time in Korea, and later in the Army Reserves. His active duty was a source of great pride and a defining chapter of his life.
Doug built a long and respected career as a quality control engineer at Honeywell, where he worked his entire professional life. Known for his precision and dedication, he earned the respect of colleagues and took great pride in his work on the space program.
Doug and Jan enjoyed life's simple pleasures together, meticulously maintaining their backyard pool, traveling, and taking spontaneous trips to nearby casinos. These moments reflected their shared sense of fun and partnership.
Doug's presence was steady and reassuring, and his impact on those around him will never be forgotten. He will be remembered for his quiet warmth, devotion to family, and the meaningful connections he built over a long and well-lived life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Nativity Lutheran Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota, with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at Sunset Cemetery, Minneapolis following the service at 1:45 pm.
