I am so very sad to learn of Kirkland's passing, I missed him at the 50th Class Reunion. He and I spent many hours wandering his family farm, fishing the local creeks "with no luck" and spending nights in his family barn. For his sake he is in a better place. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time, wish I could do more!

In high school I had the pleasure of knowing the Holcomb family. Jon and I were always getting into trouble but Kirk always treated the situation as I hope to treat my kids in those "teachable" moments. Kirk was always very encouraging and supportive of his kids and it showed through his actions-whether showing up for a cold XC meet or having the team over for spaghetti before a big meet. May God be with you all during this tough time.

What a huge loss!  One thing you may not know - Kirkland was the best dance partner in the world!!!!!  Also, when I think of him, I think how loyal and kind he was to me. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am so sorry to hear about Kirk's passing. He was a fine friend and colleague. He loved life and always lit up the room, wherever he was. I'll never forget the good times we had, whether it was discussing endless topics during Happy Hour or while listening to the blues bands at Griggs Landing in Grand Forks. I feel blessed to have known him. My prayers are with you and your family.

I am so sorry to hear about Kirkland.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Words cannot express the right feelings at this time. I will fondly remember our time at Blacksburg High. Deepest sympathy from a BHS Indian.

Kirkland was just a very pleasant and personable guy; a gracious host and convivial guest whose erudite sense of humor never failed to lighten any occasion. A firm handshake and booming vocal appreciation of any witticism were characteristic. A sigh of relief that his long travail and suffering is finally ended and a heartfelt thanks to have been counted as a friend. A life well and truly lived.

Those of us who grew up with Kirkland in Blacksburg were blessed to have such good friends - as well as supportive parents - to help us survive those teen-age years.  I remember 4-H meetings at Kirkland's home led by his father, who despite his legendary stature in conservation circles invested hours in teaching us kids about trees.  Kirkland was always a kind and lively and supportive friend when we were in high school together.  His death leaves a hole in our circle of "kids" who grew up in the '50s and '60s in Blacksburg. We mourn your passing, Kirkland.

Dear Cheryl & family,  I had the opportunity to work for Kirk at the Minot Daily News.  One of the many great traits Kirk had was his zest for life and the way he treated everyone around him!  I was always impressed for the love he showed and spoke of Cheryl and his kids!  He was one of a kind!  I pray one day you will all find peace over his passing!  RIP KIRK! I was sorry to read about Kirks passing. although I've not seen him for a number of years, I have very fond memories of him when we both lived in Grand Forks. He was a free thinker and a great fellow. We spent many hours visiting about all kinds of things. He was a very smart fellow. I shared and enjoyed the last three years with Kirk. We would take long walks, because of my shoulder surgeries, and I would point out historic buildings and neighborhoods with him. He was always inquisitive and eager to find out more about everything. There wasn't a donut shop he disliked, and breakfast became a habit with us. The thrift/junk shops and the Electric Fetus music store will surely miss him, as will Karen and I.
