Marianne Louise (Haugen) Peterson joined her beloved husband Fred Alvin in heaven on January 23rd, 2023 at the age of 87. Her bright smile and gentle laugh is greatly missed by her son Keith Peterson, daughter Annette Shorman, and daughter-in-law Debbie Keeley. Marianne considered her grandchildren a “joy” and she was blessed with six: Michelle and Jenny Knoll, Kaitlin and Nathan Peterson, and Dakota and Harley Shorman. She also had a number of grand-pups she adored, especially Belle, Jupiter and Andy, whose kisses and tail waggles brought smiles and laughter even on her final days.
Marianne was born on September 20, 1935 to Melvin and Evelyn Haugen and she had one brother, Paul. Marianne started working as a young teenager when she would ride the wagons out to work in the fields near Big Lake. She learned to cook at a young age and would make dinner for her dad when her mom was at work. That helped her when she became a cook in the test kitchens of General Mills. When she was 16, a friend set her up on a blind date with the man who would become the love of her life. When Alvin was in the military, they wrote each other and when he came home, they were married September 17, 1955. Keith was born in 1958 and Annette in 1961. In 1959, they bought their current home in Mounds View. When the kids were in school, Marianne worked in the school cafeteria as a cook. Later she worked at FMC in their cafeteria. After Alvin retired in 1992, they spent about 20 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Summers were spent camping in northern Minnesota. Marianne was an artist and crafter enjoying painting, crocheting, jewelry and card making. She demonstrated crafts at the Nowthen Threshing show for a number of years.
And in Mesa, she co-led a crafting group. A very social being, Marianne was active with her exercise group, women’s Bible study, and other church activities. Marianne’s family was precious to her and she enjoyed cooking for them for holidays and whenever they came to visit. Her potato dumplings were a favorite. Even lutefisk was tasty with her white sauce! Marianne’s many friends and family members were a great comfort to her during her illness. Her family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Allina, Minnesota Oncology, and Hospice of the Midwest for their support.
A celebration of Marianne’s life will be held at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Mounds View on Sat. April 29th with visitation at 10am, service at 11am and a lunch following. Marianne’s wish was for memorials to be directed to Abiding Savior for the youth mission trip this summer.
