I send my condolences. I am Jeannie Dompier Cocks. My father was John Dompier, your grandfather Jacob George Young was my father's youngest brother-born just 2 weeks before his mother, Dora Mae passed away. My dad found your grandfather on the street of Spokane when Jacob was in the military and they looked so alike, my dad introduced himself and told your grandfather that he had been adopted and why. My family then kept in contact with your family and i loved your mother and Aunt Sheila.

Dr.Shari was my favorite professor during my masters program at University of Minnesota.  I remember my first graded papers had “How so?”  Stamped all over it. That helped me to think more critically. I am so grateful , that has served me throughout my career. My sincere condolences. She was truly an amazing human being and educator.

Shari was my all-time favorite professors at the U of M. She was a great asset to the department and all of her work. She pushed me hard and I learned so much from her. She was fun after class too! Condolences to the family and her friends. She is surely missed. 

Shari became my graduate advisor in the HRD program after I was part of her Strategic Planning course. I've never met a tougher, smarter business woman with such incredible fashion sense (clearly once a buyer, always a buyer!) and I knew she was the right advisor for me. She was someone I could emulate and never stopped pushing me to expand my thinking and horizons  - I am so thankful to have been able to learn from her and benefit from her guidance through completion of my MA defense in 2005. My condolences to her family - she will be greatly missed. 

Shari and I were colleagues in General College and I was in a group after GC closed with Shari. We, all women and former GC people, had dinner together. I loved Shari. She was kind, warm and thoughtful.  I will miss here and I send healing love and light to her family. Blessings, lisa albrecht

I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was always loving and such a nice lady. 
I will always remember when I first met Brian and his mom when I was 15 and they were eating at byerlys in St. Louis Park. I always enjoyed my time  at your moms house eating dinner and she would always cook for us and she loved to drink wine. 
Shari will be missed dearly.

Professor Peterson previously served in faculty roles in the General College and in the Department of Work and Human Resource Education prior to the HRD program in OLPD.  She was a highly-regarded scholar of adult education, adult learning, and strategic HRD.  Her commitment to excellence in teaching was evident from the number of students she advised to completion in our graduate programs as well as making numerous contributions to our undergraduate HRD and BME programs.  She served with distinction on numerous committees for her departments, CEHD, and university, and had significant service accomplishments in professional associations, notably the Academy of Human Resource Development and American Association of Adult and Continuing Education.  On a more personal note, I well remember coming to Minnesota for my job interview in 1999, and Shari who was on the search committee, shuttled me between meetings and provided a tour of the campus.  Her warm personality along with a genuine enthusiasm and caring support for her students and colleagues told me that this was indeed a place I wanted to work.  We subsequently collaborated on projects and co-taught a course.

Peterson has numerous research projects underway, primarily in the field of HRD. Using her unique combination of real-world business experience and academic acumen, Peterson’s research examines the impact of organizational culture on employee turnover, on HRD as a strategic partner, and on workplace learning. Her newest research will examine the relationship between culture and employee derailment potential.

“Cultures are imbedded in organizations. Changing them is the most difficult change of all to affect. First, organizations need to recognize their culture and their employees’ perceptions of it,” she says. “My work is all about the relationship between the individual and his or her working environment.”

Peterson adds that there are similarities between the influences of culture in a corporation and that of an academic institution. Thus the challenges in retaining and developing employees, college students, and faculty are also similar in many respects. Her role in the college, she says, is the perfect blend of her experiences as an academic and a businesswoman.

Associate professor Shari Peterson coordinates work and human resource education with business acumen

Shari Peterson, associate professor and coordinator for work and human resource education programs, was once a keen and contented buyer and senior manager for Dayton’s department stores. Her favorite part of the job, she says, was coaching her team of managers.

“Leadership development was the best aspect of my job at Dayton’s,” she says. “No wonder I now find myself teaching courses in Human Resource Development (HRD) and Adult Education.”

When she was offered an opportunity to come to the U of M to coordinate the Marketing Certificate Program, she jumped at the chance. In that position, Peterson taught courses in marketing and management to undergraduates. In her “spare time” she completed a Ph.D.

She then transferred to a new department, allowing a shift in focus to research and teaching and advising graduate students. She claims that advising bright doctoral students is a privilege she relishes, saying “I like to stay closely connected to my doc advisees to get them off on the right foot, grow academically, and ultimately succeed.”

Today, as coordinator of the work and human resource education program in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development, Peterson acts as a liaison and conduit of information between the department chair, faculty, and students.

“I schedule courses, lead program meetings, disseminate information used for admission decisions, market the program and answer inquiries from potential students, and facilitate moving forward with the ‘Blue Ribbon’ initiative as it relates to our work and human resource education program,” she says breathlessly.

I met Dr. Peterson for the first time when I visited the OLPD Department at the University of Minnesota to inquire about their programs. Her smile and marketing skills were so impressive that I decided to join the HRD program for which she was the program coordinator. When I got admitted into the program, Dr. Peterson was assigned as my adviser. Her good counsel, patience, and motherly care for her Ph.D.  advisees was phenomenal. I remember the breakfasts at Egg and I at the beginning and end of every semester with her PhD advisees, both past and current and the lunch at Jacksonville Florida and Cork Ireland. When I visited you at your house in 2016, you looked healthy and full-spirited. You lived a life worth your salt. I was fortunate to have you as a mother figure at UMNTC. Dr. Peterson, you will forever be missed. REST WELL!

My condolences to Shari's family. She was my colleague at the University of Minnesota and deeply influential in my early years as a professor. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She will be sorely missed by so many.

My deepest condolences to Matt and his family. Although I never met Shari, I already know she was an amazing woman from my interactions with Matt over the last couple of years being his co-worker.   Thinking of you Matt and missing your daily memes!
