Rafael Montoya Jr. was born on October 18, 1988 and his time with us ended on May 12, 2016. Rafael was born in Mission Hills, CA and grew up in a household full of life. Five brothers and one sister made for a house full of fun and loving memories that will live on with them. He started off as the little brother who always thought he was a ninja and grew into a real life super-hero. After graduating San Fernando High, Rafael went into the Marine Corps in 2006. Rafael served his country in Iraq with Golf Company 2/23. He was a squad leader who was known for his discipline, selflessness and positivity. Rafael was a leader who stood up for the little guy then tried to make him stronger. After moving on from his service he remained in close contact with his brothers in the Corps and joined VER at their location in Glendale, CA quickly working his way up to Branch Operations Manager in Phoenix, AZ.
He left a lasting impression on so many. Rafael was motivated to stay physically fit and inspired others to follow in his adventurous footsteps. Rafael walked through life with a balance people aspire to. He had gentleness with his strength, he was a cheerful problem solver, and he fully subscribed to the work hard play harder ethic.
Rafael Jr. is survived by his father Rafael Montoya Sr., his mother Petra Martinez, his brothers Eriberto, Eloy, Hector, Andrew, Omar and his sister Erica. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to a GoFundMe account set up in his name. For those who would like to honor Rafael but may not be able to make the services please contact Eloy at [email protected] for information on a Tough Mudder Team to be set up in his honor. “No matter the time or distance. We’ll always be there.”
