Gloria M. Galván met her Savior on Friday, April 26, 2024 after a short battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully in Edinburg, Texas, the same city where she was born, while surrounded by her immediate family. She was 64 years young.
Born on Christmas Day 1959 to Adalberto and Maria N. Munguía, Gloria was the second of five siblings. She was a shy, creative child, and very much an old soul. She was serious, but never too serious to catch cicadas and play pretend travel with her siblings. She loved to express herself by filling notebooks with stories, poems, and other creative writings.
In early 1977, along with her mom, big sister Lydia, and little brother Adalberto Jr., Gloria decided to follow Jesus. Gloria was soon baptized and began telling everyone she could about Jesus—even preaching to her family members who had already decided to follow Jesus. As her big sister Lydia describes it, “When Gloria got saved, she really got saved.”
After graduating from Mission High School in 1978, Gloria briefly attended the San Antonio School of Medical Assistants before returning home to work full-time as an insurance clerk for a local physician.
In 1982, Gloria began attending Iglesia Bautista Oremex. The following year, a young man named Juan Galván, who also attended Oremex, took interest in her. Attracted by her love for Jesus, enchanting smile, and captivating beauty, Juan convinced Gloria to date him and ultimately to marry him. They married on March 31, 1984. For 40 years and 26 days, they were inseparable, and their love and commitment remained unshaken until the end.
Gloria continued her employment until early 1988, when she learned she was pregnant. At that point, she left her job to prepare for her chosen, full-time calling: mother and homemaker extraordinaire. In November 1988, Gloria and Juan welcomed their only son Josué. He was the apple of Gloria’s eye, and she never missed an opportunity to tell him how proud she was of him. When Josué married Yvette López in 2012, she gained a daughter and loved Yvette as her own.
A woman of many talents and hobbies, Gloria enjoyed cooking and baking (her banana bread was unparalleled), crafting handmade gifts (soaps, candles, and jewelry to name a few), and brought smiles to countless Sunday School and Wednesday evening students’ faces with her sweets and treats. Gloria was a prolific songwriter, writing over 60 songs about her loves—Jesus and family—and she had a beautiful singing voice. She radiated compassion, kindness, and gentleness to all she met, and always spoke truth in love. She was the definition of a prayer warrior, and never missed an opportunity to remind you that “God goes before.”
Gloria is now reunited in heaven with her brother Adalberto Munguía, Jr., mother Maria N. Munguía, father Adalberto Munguía, father-in-law Luis Galván, and fur grandchild Riley Galván. She leaves behind her loving husband Juan; her son Josué, daughter-in-law Yvette, and fur grandchildren Adam and Robby; her sisters Lydia (Larry) Espinoza, Thelma Munguía, and Anna (Jorge) Arróliga; her mother-in-law Maria Galván; her sister-in-law Linda (Randy) Johnson; her brothers-in-law Oscar (Elinor) Galván and Luis (Dinora) Galván, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Gloria’s legacy will live on, and she will be missed more than words can express.
