
Gustavo Mercado, 88, of Mission, Texas, passed peacefully on February 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 22, 1937, in Mission, Texas, to his beloved parents, Adelaido Mercado and Belen Godina.
Gustavo lived a life rooted in love, hard work, and simple joys. For 65 beautiful years, he shared a devoted marriage with the love of his life, Josefina Diaz Mercado. Together they built a strong and loving family that became the center of his world.
He leaves behind his cherished children: Diana Araguz (Juan), Mary Ramos (Jorge), Gloria Cavazos (Albert), and Josie Jacinto (Juan). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Brenda Lee, Yvette, Juan Jr., Krystal, Joseph, Elizabeth, George Jr., Erica, Albert Jr., Nicholas Jared, Alyssa Gabriella, Ashley Janel, and Justin. His legacy continues to grow through his 29 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
Gustavo worked as a truck driver for many years, a career that perfectly suited his love of travel and adventure. He knew the roads like the back of his hand and had an incredible sense of direction — his family often joked that he was their very own “human GPS.” No matter where you were going, Grandpa knew the way.
He found happiness in the simplest moments. He loved being outside, digging for ants, pulling weeds, and spending hours just sitting outdoors enjoying the fresh air. He could often be found relaxing with biscuits and coffee from Whataburger, savoring his favorite treats. He had a sweet tooth and never turned down sweets, a cold coke, or chicharrónes. Tacos were always a favorite, and he never missed a chance to enjoy a good meal surrounded by family.
Gustavo loved music and dancing, and he seemed to know everyone he met. His warm personality, easy conversation, and friendly smile made him unforgettable. He especially treasured visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing made his face light up more than having his family gathered around him.
Above all, Gustavo Mercado was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His life was a testament to love, dedication, and the importance of family. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
