Larry was a great guy to work with,
always willing to help us out with what we needed or what he could with. humorous and funny at times.
we miss you Larry. 

Always had fun with Cousin Larry when the Minnesota Mortensens would come down every few years for a visit.  I think it was more of a "work retreat" for my dad, Walter.  He and Carl always had some project going.  I think Larry found me to be a nuisance until we were in our high school stage but we got along just fine.  Last time I saw him was when I took Uncle Art down there before the snow flew.  Larry dragged every one of his Massey-Harris rigs out and made me drive them (well, he didn't have to twist my arm -- farm boys and tractors--whaddaya think?)  We were dumbfounded when we got the news of Larry's passing.  Our prayers are with the rest of our family down south.

I would like to take a moment to thank all who have posted a memory and condolences to this site. We celebrated the life and contributions made to our lives, by Uncle Larry; as he was such a blessing to us all, on Friday morning. Due to the pandemic, the attendance was small, but the love was abundant. It will also be hard to make sure to thank each and every one of you that knew and shared your lives with my Uncle. So, please accept this message as our heart-felt  thanks for being part of my Uncle's life. I would also like to thank the Staff at Valley Memorial Gardens for simplifying and supporting us during this challenging time. You've been wonderful.

For more then 60 years, Larry and I have been friends and making memories together. It all started back at Bryan Elementary, while shooting spit wads at Mr. Davis.  Thank goodness he never caught us!  Our friendship grew and during our high school days, I worked on Larry’s family dairy.  When some of the workers didn’t show up, we would irrigate
all night and then go to school. Poor teachers! Sometimes the electricity would go out and I’d get a call from Larry. It was milking by hand early in the morning.

Then, in September of 1967,  hurricane Beulah hit.  Because of the flooding, school was out, but I still had football practice twice a day. Guess what? Another call from Larry! He announced it was time for a cattle drive!  I laughed for at least five minutes, thinking he was kidding!
Larry said, “Are you through?  Hurricane 
Beulah is flooding our pastures and we’ve gotta move these cows! “  He said, “Dress like a cowboy!” So I did. But Larry couldn’t find his hat, but boots he did have.  The Gray family loaned us two of their horses for the cattle drive. We drove over 100 dairy cows up Stewart Road to the 5 mile line, where Larry’s Dad was waiting for us.
Traveling North, the cows would move under flooded citrus trees where we couldn’t see them.  That’s how high the water was. Larry fell off his horse twice while trying to bend far enough down to look under the trees.  Boy, did I have a good laugh! He would stand up in waist deep water, give me a stern look and then bust out laughing!  And I would laugh even harder and he would give me that same stern look!  And then laugh again. I sure will miss his laugh.
My memories of Larry help keep me smiling.  Sixty years of friendship. My, how time flies.

Larry will always be our best friend, our best man, and an adopted Uncle to our children.
Our daughter, Amanda, was born on Larry’s birthday and they always shared a special bond.
He taught our daughter to tie her shoes, gave her her first rose, gave 
our children their first very own kitten, an orange striped tabby, which they promptly named Tiger Larry! That kitten grew up to be their favorite cat. 
 When it came time for pageants, football games and graduations, Larry was always in the stands.

After his parents passed, he would often come over for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. He always showed up with gifts. Of course Larry always offered to help. He began by helping to season the mashed potatoes. It wasn’t long before he was our designated mashed potato maker.

All of you here know that Larry was a tractor genius and a perfectionist at everything he did. 
We acquired my Dad’s 1957 Ford
Jubilee. It had sat outside for years and was basically a lost cause. Larry brought it back to 
life, then he hauled it to Oklahoma 
for us, where it is still running strong. 

We almost lost Larry in an accident back in the early 80’s.
Through the Grace of God he survived and we thank Jesus for continuing to share Larry with us these last few years. Larry was a 
true believer, so we all know he is up there giving those amazing hugs of his to all those friends and loved ones that went before him. 


Even though my life growing up in California and then traveling with my husband in the Army did not afford me very many opportunities to see and visit with my uncle Larry, I was able to witness and feel his love and thoughtfulness for our family and friends. He seemed at times to be very quiet and reserved, but he was always listening and paying attention to the needs of others.
I may not be able to be there tomorrow to say good-bye to my uncle, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are there with you all.

i will miss getting together to visit like the old days . We used to hangout at Minimax Parking lot. Though we hadn't seen each other in an couple of years , i still always counted you a good friend . We'll see you one of these days , condolences to your brothers and their kin.


Dear Mortensen Family,

The Waitz Family remembers you all well. Larry and I were in Sunday School/Youth Group/Confirmation Class together at Trinity Lutheran Church. I remember how Mr. and Mrs. Mortensen faithfully attended and I could always count on seeing Larry there. We made good memories together, including a beach camping trip when Pastor Taylor served at the church. We were all starving one night, only to discover that the delicious smelling chicken the parents grilled, was covered in wind blown sand! Larry always had a good attitude about stuff like that. Never do I remember him being anything but thoughtful and considerate.  My condolences to all of you. It sounds like he left an amazing legacy of kindness and love for you all.


We were neighbors growing up on the farm next to the dairy.  

Matt was a hard working young man.

At times, he'd help us pick a good calf from Carl's herd.

Rest In Peace Larry

Larry was a true friend during the trying times of the 1980’s.  He was the positive influence I needed at the time. Taught me honesty is the always the best policy. He always stood up for what he felt was right and never compromised. I will never forget, and always miss you my friend. You were truly a blessing in my life.
