Harold Edward “Doc” Gray, 86, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, in Mission Viejo, California surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and respected member of his community, Doc leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and steadfast loyalty.
Born on December 26, 1938, in Amsterdam, New York, Harold was the son of Richard G. Gray and Hazel (Brickner) Gray. After graduating from high school, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. There he trained as a hospital corpsman and earned the enduring nickname “Doc,” a title that would follow him throughout his life with pride and affection.
During his distinguished 20-year military career, Doc served with honor and distinction. For ten of those years, he was attached to the United States Marine Corps as a Medical Field Service Technician—a role that exemplified his courage and commitment to caring for others. His final tour brought him and his family to Southern California’s Camp Pendleton. In 1974, after two decades of faithful service to his country, Doc retired from the Navy with an honorable discharge.
Following his military retirement, Doc continued to serve others in a new capacity—as equipment manager and athletic trainer at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, California. Over more than two decades at DHHS, he became a beloved figure among teachers, coaches, support staff, and students alike. Known for being hard-working, dependable, conscientious and thoughtful, Doc made a lasting impact on generations of young athletes and colleagues who came to admire both his professionalism and kindness.
Doc’s devotion extended beyond his professional life into the heart of his family. He shared 65 loving years with his wife Christine (Zullo) Gray. Together they raised three children: Michele (Stephen) Saba; Richard Gray; and Kathleen (Stephen) Mason. He was also a proud and devoted grandfather to seven grandchildren, Zachary Mason, Jake Mason, Jack Saba, Bobby Gray, Joey Gray, Grace Saba and Mikey Gray as well as a much-loved great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren, Saidi Mason, Sonni Mason and Jameson Mason. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and a host of other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Marie Gray; his father Richard G. Gray; his mother Hazel (Brickner) Gray; his brother Richard “Dick” Hasenfuss; and sister Jeannette (Hasenfuss) Shelmandine.
Harold Edward “Doc” Gray will be remembered not only for his service to country and community but also for the quiet strength of character that defined every chapter of his life. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who were touched by his presence. A Memorial Gathering will be held on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Fairhaven Memorial Services located at 27856 Center Dr., Mission Viejo, California.
