With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of José Humberto Soto, affectionately known as Joe, on January 6, 2025, in Dana Point, California. Joe was a man of remarkable humor, boundless warmth, and steadfast friendship, whose legacy will be cherished by all who knew him.
Born on March 26, 1936, in Havana, Cuba, Joe displayed an early passion for learning and adventure. He attended the private Jesuit Preparatory School in Havana Cuba, Colegio de Belén, known as “The Place of Education” and after pursued his petroleum geology interests at the University of Havana, studying rock formations and subsurface structures in the search for oil reserves. In 1964, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued his education at Louisiana State University (LSU), earning a second degree in Engineering. In 1969, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Ever ambitious, Joe later completed a master’s degree in Business Administration and built a successful career as an entrepreneur, founding and running a textile business until his retirement.
On July 15, 1961, Joe married the love of his life, Elvira Amparo Alonso during turbulent civil unrest related to Castro’s regime. Joe first met Elvira in their early teens and later at the University of Havana their friendship grew into a deep love for each other. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and shared accomplishments. Elvira, his devoted wife and steadfast partner, remained by his side through every chapter of their journey until her passing after more than 61 years of marriage. Their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them—a testament to enduring love and mutual respect.
Joe’s warmth, devotion, and love for his family defined him. As a husband, father to four children, and grandfather to two, he cherished time with his family above all else. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: starting his mornings with a rich espresso, savoring his wife’s perfectly cooked meals, and spending time with loved ones over lively games of pool and dominoes. A passionate boxing fan, Joe’s love for the sport reflected his appreciation for moments of excitement and connection.
Joe had a rare gift for building deep and lasting friendships. He turned acquaintances into lifelong companions, some dating back to his childhood in elementary school in Cuba. His loyalty and kind-hearted nature were evident in the enduring bonds he nurtured across decades and continents.
Joe’s humor was his hallmark. With a mischievous grin and a clever remark always at the ready, he brought laughter and light to every room he entered. His ability to find joy in each moment, paired with his genuine warmth, made him beloved by all who knew him. José "Joe" Humberto Soto lived a life full of love, laughter, and resilience, inspiring those around him to embrace life’s simple joys and meaningful relationships. His passing leaves a profound void, but his spirit and memory will continue to brighten the lives of those he touched. Joe is survived by his four beloved children, his two adored grandchildren, and countless friends who were enriched by his kindness, humor, and generosity of spirit. Joe reminded us all of the value of family, laughter, and the enduring friendships that gives life its deepest meaning. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
