

Albert Lee Sturtevant, Jr.of Theodore, a World War II veteran and former Democratic Party leader in Mobile County, died July 26. He was 84. Sturtevant went to work as a bicycle messenger for the L&N Railroad at the age of 12, a job he kept for years during summers while growing up in Mobile County. He was serving with the U.S. Navy in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean at the end of the war.Sturtevant returned to Mobile County after the war and went to work full-time for L&N Railroad, where he remained until his retirement in 1989. He was treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks in the Mobile-New Orleans District and a lifelong Democrat. He was involved in many political campaigns and most recently served on the Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee.Active in Mobile Youth Baseball, Sturtevant served as an executive officer with the league. He enjoyed sports, particularly watching his son play baseball and basketball at McGill Institute, and, later, baseball in the Houston Astros organization. His favorite teams were the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Atlanta Braves and the New Orleans Saints.He was a member of the American Legion, Post 250. One of the oldest surviving members of the American Legion in the Mobile district, Sturtevant was a member for more than sixty years.Sturtevant was the son of the late Albert and Erna Mae Sturtevant. He was the brother of Mary Tomberlin of Theodore, and Aline Sweatt of Theodore, who survive him; and the late Grace Deakle of Irvington, and Ruth Stroecker of Mobile.Sturtevant is survived by his two children, Anthony Sturtevant of Inglis, Fla., whose wife is Genie; and Jamie Martin of Montgomery, Ala., whose husband is Dave.His grandchildren include Toni Lee Sturtevant of Tallahassee, Fla.; Amy Gregor of Gainesville, Fla.; Emily Martin and Dylan Skip Martin, both of Montgomery, Ala. Sturtevant also has two great grandchildren, and he loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews. Active in the Catholic Church, Sturtevant was a member of St. Philip Neri Parish in Belle Fontaine, Ala.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 2:00 PM from St. Philip Catholic Church. Visitation will be held on Monday 1:00 PM until service time at the church. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
