
Alvin Michael Olson, Resident of Mobile, Alabama, at age 90 passed away peacefully on September 7, 2011. Alvin was born March 15, 1921 in Penzance Saskatchewan Canada, to Andrew (Ole Andrias) and Selma Olson. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Velma; his sons, Jerald (wife Marsha Olson) of San Francisco, CA; Douglas (wife Nely Liwanag Olson) of Anchorage, AK and Ken (wife Dawn Roddy Olson) of Chesapeake, VA. and his grandchildren, Omny, Shannon, Eric, Jap and Carla. He was preceded in death by his sister, Milly, Marie and his brother, Andrew (Andy). He graduated from Univ. of Saskatchewan, in 1946 with a BA in Chemistry. He began work for the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company in Manitoba. In 1957 Alvin and his family moved to Danbury, CN to work for the Newmont Exploration Ltd as the Chief Chemist. After moving to Chesapeake VA in 1964, he completed his MBA from Old Dominion University. In his position with Virginia Chemicals as the Analytical Supervisor the family was transferred to Mobile in 1981 to open the Bucks Plant. He retired in 1984 and enjoyed many active retirement years. Alvin instructed computer skills for the Phillip College and electronics at the Southeast College of Technology, consulted for the EPA Super Fund project and was the Scout Master with a Mobile Boy Scouts troop. He loved the outdoors, science fiction, working in the yard and glassblowing in his workshop. A memorial gathering will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens, 6040 Three Notch Road., Mobile, Alabama, on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/index)
