She is remembered by all who knew her as a fiercely independent woman who was both formally and self-educated, had a razor sharp wit and an unwavering devotion to her late husband Bert of 45 years with whom she enjoyed attending Mardis Gras Balls when they were young.
In her younger years, Barbara was active in local politics and she became well versed in Mobile history and all things British. It was often remarked that Barbara was a one-woman trivia team which was a skill fed by her belief in reading a book a day for the majority of her life and collecting an impressive library.
She lived with a young heart, choosing to try parasailing for her 65th birthday. She also achieved her lifelong dream of seeing the Scottish Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland with two of her grandchildren. She refused to be called ‘grandma’ by her many grandchildren insisting she was never going to be old enough to be anyone’s grandma.
Always creative and deceptively intelligent, she saved one of her most entertaining escapades for last by outsmarting her caretakers and layers of security to take herself for a walk. Those who love her would expect no less from someone so quick-witted. She will always be remembered as intelligent and opinionated and she will be greatly missed by all.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Bertram F Drinkard (2001) and her eldest son Bobby Drinkard (1975). She is survived by three children, Jeffrey Drinkard, Sandra Fuqua and John Daniel Drinkard, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Her memory will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 15, at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
To honor her, we request contributions be made in her name to angel-ride.org/TheFoundation.aspx which assists families with special needs children afford medical services.
