arbara Lucia McDonough peacefully passed away at her home on Monday, August 30, 2021 surrounded by her family after a hard fought battle with cancer. Barbara, 60, was a native and lifelong resident of Mobile.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Anthony Lucia and Merry Lou Lucia, and her brother, John "Johnny" Lucia. She is survived by her husband of thirty-nine years, Pat McDonough, and their children Christina (Ian) Claridge, and Patrick (Whitney) McDonough, Jr. Barbara was blessed with four grandchildren, Goodman and Annie McDonough, and Wyn and Thomas Claridge, whom she adored beyond measure. She is also survived by her siblings, Cecelia (Happy) Archer, Rosanne (Craig) Olmstead , Tony (Gina) Lucia, Dr. Michael Lucia (Rachel), sister-in-law, Beverly Lucia Sliger, and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara attended Little Flower Catholic Grade school and W. P. Davidson High School where she was an avid soccer player. She also attended the University of South Alabama. After college she began her professional career working for a local oral surgeon and served as Office Manager during her thirty-five year tenure.
She then had the good fortune of working with Harvey and Thomas Orthodontics for the remaining time in her career. She absolutely loved and enjoyed her association with Drs. Keith Harvey and Carter Thomas together with the entire team. They became her second family and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for their generosity, compassion and support during this difficult time. The family would also like to acknowledge Mandy Stringfellow for her compassionate and heartfelt care for Barbara over her last few months.
Barbara's love of life was infectious. She brought a smile to everyone's face through her kindness and generosity. To know her was to love her, and she will be dearly missed. She loved spending time with her family, especially over the bay, at the beach and on the boat. Barbara loved celebrations but, at the same time, ensuring everyone around her enjoyed themselves as well. Barbara, affectionately known to her grandchildren as "Nonna," was truly happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren. Barbara will always be remembered for her loyalty to friends and family, her fun-loving attitude, her generosity, whether it be for food, spirit or love, and, most of all, for her faith and total devotion to her grandchildren.
The visitation will be on Thursday, September 2nd beginning at 10:30 AM at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with the rosary followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Building Something Beautiful for God" Capital Campaign II Fund at St. Ignatius Parish, 3704 Spring Hill Avenue Mobile, AL 36608 or to the charity of your choice. Our Nonna will forever be missed but she will perpetually be the life of our party!
