Bonnie W. Combs, age 94, died January 19, 2016, in Birmingham, AL, after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Hilham, TN and a resident of Mobile, AL for more than 70 years prior to moving to Birmingham in 2013 to be near her daughter, Virginia. Her parents were the late Ella Mae and Ben Bleu Daily. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Howard Everette Combs. Their love for, and support of, each other was truly an affair of the heart that was envied by those who knew them. Mrs. Combs also survived her sister, Lorene J. Taylor, and two brothers, C. Clifton Daily and “Jack” Daily. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Mobile.
At the outset of World War II, Mrs. Combs briefly worked for the Department of the Army in Paris, TN. She soon transferred to the Army Air Corps’ Brookley Field in Mobile, where she fell in love with the city and continued to work at Brookley for almost 20 years, including after it became an Air Force Base with the creation of the United States Air Force in 1947.
Known to everyone as “Willie,” Mrs. Combs possessed wit and humor, took great pride in her home and family, loved her neighbors, who returned that affection, and took special interest in the neighborhood children. She will be remembered for her gentle, sweet spirit and the way she lived her life, always with respect and hope, and most of all, with endurance.
Mrs. Combs is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Stuart M. Foss), of Birmingham. She also leaves numerous cherished nieces and nephews, other relatives and beloved friends.
Graveside services will be held Monday, January 25, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
