
Charles Shaffer McDonald, Jr., age 82, passed away Monday August 13, 2012 in a local hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Mobile and a longtime devoted member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, where he served in numerous capacities, including the Finance Committee, the Parish Council, Building Committee and Holy Name Society. He was a graduate of McGill Institute. Mr. McDonald retired from Moore-Handley and subsequently worked for Turner Supply for 30 years. He was a caring and kind man who was loved by many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Shaffer McDonald Sr. and Eva Julia Billy McDonald, his first wife, Sarah Rockwell McDonald, and sisters, Mary Elizabeth McDonald and Evelyn M. Cash. Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife, JoAnne W. McDonald, his sister Maretta M. (Buddy) Buttelmann of Friends-wood, TX; and children, Catherine M. Braun, Houston; Charles Shaffer McDonald III, (Lisa); Otelia Anne Schwartz, Chicago; Evelyn M. McConnell (Alex), Houston; and Owen R. McDonald (Deborah), Daphne; Martha R. Fortenberry (Bob), Memphis; Donna R. Wattier (Steve); and Anna R. Kiburz (Kevin). Grandchildren, Erika, Shaffer, Michael, Sarah, Victoria, Russell, Katie, Samuel, Joseph, Madelyn, Emma, Amanda, Eva, Olivia, Robin, Madison, Davis, and Hannah. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Wilma Bearden (Douglas) and Margaret Cole (Wilson), of Mobile, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. on Thursday, August 16, 2012 with memories and the Rosary in the Sarto Center at St. Pius X (217 Sage Ave), and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pius X Church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery, Dauphin Island Parkway. Honorary pallbearers will be W. Douglas Bearden, Wilson L. Cole, Andrew Cash, Warren A. "Buddy" Buttelmann, and Arthur W. Cash. Active pallbearers will be Shaffer E. Braun, Robert H. Fortenberry, R. Madison Fortenberry, S. Alexander McConnell, Michael H. McDonald, and Steven V. Wattier.
