Curtis "Kick" James Avinger

Mr. Curtis “Kick” James Avinger, age 93, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2015. He was a native of Mobile, AL and longtime resident of Cottage Hill. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Sabine “Bea” Frances Hansen Avinger, parents, Lee Edward and Daisy Gertrude Kirkpatrick Avinger, grandson, Ricky Downing, brothers, Melvin Lee, Kenneth Dillard, Edward Kirkpatrick and Robert Leon Avinger. Mr. Avinger retired after over 40 years as a sheetmetal foreman/ship superintent with Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Honor Flight. Kick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. His greatest memories were spent with his family at Mullet Point “ Grampaw’s Bay.” Mr. Avinger is survived by his children James “Jimmy” Curtis (Dianna) Avinger, Sandra “Sandy” Avinger (Robert) Downing, and Patricia “Patty” Avinger Mininger. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his grandchildren, Randy Avinger, Roddy Avinger, Rob Downing, Russ Downing, Regan Downing, Ryan Mininger, Eric Mininger, Lauren Mininger Rhodes (Brad) and ten great-grandchildren, Harrison, Hayden, Ella, Hallie Rose, Sabine, and Cullen Downing, Caitlin, Paige, Hannah and Halley Avinger. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of 4 NE Oncology of Mobile Infirmary, Tracey Hammack, Dr. Caesar C. Agagan, Dr. Daniel Cameron, Matt Brown and Gentiva Hospice for the love and support given during their father’s illness. The visitation will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street. Visitation will be held at Kingswood United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until until service time of 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Avinger’s grandsons, Randy and Roddy Avinger, Rob, Russ, and Regan Downing, Ryan and Eric Mininger and great-grandsons, Harrison and Hayden Downing.
