David was born on August 4, 1949 in Pensacola, Florida at the Naval Air Station and died peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 13, 2025. Following his father’s retirement from the Navy, he returned to Mobile where he started the 6th grade at UMS. He was very proud to have served as a page at the US House of Representatives for US Representative Tom Steed during his junior year of high school. As a child he worked for his father’s soft shell crab operation at Weeks Bay. He loved spending his summers at the Gulf house at Alabama Point (Orange Beach) that he and his two brothers built themselves in one summer. It was here that he acquired his love for fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. He was affectionately called “Bones” which was a nickname given to him by his two brothers Pokey and Bebo, who thought he needed a skinny Mobile nickname.
He graduated from University Military School in 1967 and the University of Alabama in 1971 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon where he built the stage for the band which lasted until the old DKE house was torn down. David was owner of Coastal Door & Window for 45 years. He knew every phase of home construction and worked directly with numerous architects and builders, many of whom became personal friends. He was famous for his ability to specify the appropriate millwork which best complimented the architectural theme of the home.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Crenshaw Miller, Sr. and Marian Shannon Ross Miller, his brother Harold Crenshaw Miller, Jr. (Pokey), his sister Shannon Miller Lord, and brother in law David Caldwell Russell. He is survived by his wife, Ann Russell Miller, his daughters Shannon Miller Cook (Robert), and Mary Russell Miller, his son, David Winston Miller, Jr., his grandchildren Ann Selden Cook and Robert Herrin Cook, Jr., his brother William Ross Miller (Bebo), his sister Katie Miller Farnell (Donny), his sister in law Margaret Sellers Miller, brother in law Larry Lord (Peggy), sister in law Virginia Kilpatrick Russell, brother and sister in law Dr. Donald MacDonald Russell, Jr. (Cherry), god children Sunny Shackelford McPhillips and Marian Shannon Miller, and many nieces and nephews.
