Among Doris’ chores was to fetch water from the outside springs on cold dawn mornings before breakfast. By age 15 she was employed by a garment manufacturing company. Turning 17, she was employed as a typist at the Mobile, AL shipyards during and until the end of World War II.
Doris married Charles M. Waterall in 1946. Charlie, along with his brother and father were owners of the Waterall Theatre chain developed before and during World War II with a summit of 27 theatres.
She continued her education in bookkeeping and typing skills at the Mobile Shipyards. Doris became an integral part of managing her husbands’interest of the Waterall indoor and drive -in motion picture theatres in Alabama and Mississippi.
Later in life, Doris became employed in electronics production in the New Orleans and Chicago area, some products associated with national defense. Her hobbies included custom made ceramics, painting, drawing, woodworking design, and jewelry design, the latter she was active in until her death.
Doris was always ready to teach her skills to anyone who was interested.
Salt water fishing was her joy and relaxation, especially the bayous, bays, and lakes near New Orleans, Bay St Louis and Mobile area. When salt water wasn’t available, you would see her car cruising down the old dirt roadways with cane fishing poles secured above the windows. Doris had “true grit” and stood her ground. Doris also immersed herself with the closeness of family and abiding respect of her elder bringing sunshine to all. We will truly miss this woman that had the ultimate gusto for life.
