

Doris Louise Newell Warren, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died peacefully on April 24, 2014. She was born October 11, 1924 to Dr. Quitman Underwood and Katie Lou Kelley Newell. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating from Mary Institute in 1941. Doris loved spending holidays and summers in Whistler, Alabama with her extended family.
After attending Bennett College in Millbrook, New York, she transferred to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned her degree. Following graduation, she moved to Whistler and worked for National Airlines in Mobile.
In 1946 she married John Movius Warren and lived in Flint, Michigan for one year while he attended General Motors Institute. In 1947 they returned to Mobile, where she happily resided for the rest of her life. Her four children were all born and raised in Mobile.
Doris loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. She served through the Meals-on-Wheels program as well as the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She was also a member of the Junior League of Mobile. Her passions included tennis, bridge, cooking, decorating, antiquing, and traveling the world. Every year she enjoyed spending summer and fall in Cashiers, North Carolina with family. Doris and John developed many close friendships during their fifty years at High Hampton.
Above all, she loved her family and friends and was always a happy, giving person. Mama D will be sorely missed.
Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Quitman U. Newell, Jr., and her husband of sixty-four years, John M. Warren. She is survived by their children, Katy Warren Towers (Charles), Dr. John Movius Warren, Jr. (Josephine), Laurie Warren Crane (Randy), Thomas Underwood Warren (Christine), and their grandchildren, John Warren, III (Stephanie), Allison Warren (Joe), David Warren, Margaret Crane, Katy Crane Lee (Nathan), Randall Crane, and Sophie Johnson.
The family is very appreciative for the caregivers’ loving attention during the last two-and-a-half years, especially Christine Seymour and Barbara Johnson. Doris’s dear friend, Sister Adams, has also been a great blessing.
A service to celebrate Doris’s life will be held at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church on April 29 at 11:00 am, with a visitation preceding at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL, 36604.
