Dorothy Ellen Pope Swain

Dorothy Ellen Pope Swain - 85, beloved wife, sister, mother and grandmother, died on December 31, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James Carlos Swain; children, Carla Renegar and her husband Michael, Gregory Swain and his wife, Karen; Dorothy "Dorrie" Rose and her husband, Walter, Steven Swain and his wife, Wendy, Michael Swain and Eileen Woodlief; 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Rabun and her husband, Stanley; one brother, Eddie Pope; a beloved sister-in law, Jean Swain; and special niece, Judy Galloway. Dot was a graduate of Troy State Teachers College where she was assistant editior of the Tropolitan and active in the Drama Department and many other organizations. As an Army wife, she maintained the home and children through many TDY assignments and deployments. She loved traveling and living in many new and interesting places. She was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church serving as Sunday School teacher, a Circle leader, a deacon and an elder. She especially loved singing in the choir. In recongnition of her service she was presented with an Honorary Life Membership in the Women of the Church, Presbyterian Church (USA). An avid reader, a trip to the library was one of her greatest pleasures. Dot was an expert seamstress. She sewed three Azalea Trail Maid dresses and accesories for three of her granddaughters. A favorite activity was making pajamas for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a prolific quilter and spent many hours designing and sewing gifts for those she loved. A memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church on January 4, 2013 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions to Grace Presbyterian Church, 1255 Navco Rd., Mobile, AL or the charity of your choice.
