George Stevens Sutton, MD, aged 85, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday December 1, 2025. He is predeceased by his parents Remar Marion Sutton Sr and Mildred Louise George Sutton, as well as his son Steven Gilbert Sutton.
George was born on June 2, 1940 in Millen GA, where he lived with his parents and younger brother Remar Marion Sutton. Following high school graduation, during which time he played the trumpet and was drum major of the high school band, he attended Emory University for college and medical school. Upon graduation, he entered in the US Air Force, where he ascended the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel and was stationed in Brooks AFB in San Antonio, Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque NM, Williams AFB in Mesa AZ, MacDill AFB in Tampa, and Kunsan AFB in Korea. He was also deployed to Mendoza Argentina and Tahkli AFB in Thailand. He was named Flight Surgeon of the Year in 1969, and was honorably discharged in 1974 to practice medicine full-time.
He considered his role as a physician to be an honor and a personal calling, and specialized in OB services before starting a private practice in Family Medicine, and then concluding his career focusing on geriatrics. He also took a special interest in unique cases, such as the treatment of AIDS in prisons, and was a founding member of the US Sports Academy. He remained a fully licensed and practicing physician up to the week of his passing, and was recently honored by the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center for serving on the staff for over 50 years.
In George’s free time, he was a thrill-seeker. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many nature filled days. He loved flying deeply and was the proud owner of what he called "The Navajo Queen" . He had a life-long passion for scuba diving and skiing, spending many Mardi Gras vacations in Montana on the slopes of the Big Mountain. His abiding love for music extended to nearly all imaginable genres, and he never stopped seeking the new and unique. He also could spend hours reading a good autobiography, and was always happy to cuddle up to one of his many pets, or take his wife Marsha ballroom dancing.
George loved spending time with his abundant family. He is survived by his wife Marsha, his brother Remar, his 3 daughters, Dawn, Susanne and Dorothy, his two stepdaughters Tammy and Jennifer, his 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. His exuberant and never ending quest to experience and share knowledge, joy, and life with people extended to his very last days.
The Sutton family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the above-and-beyond care received in the Mobile Infirmary Neurology ICU during his final days.
