

Dr. Edward Alton Dudley Jr., died peacefully on January 30, 2020, at his home after a lifetime of service to his family and community. Born on November 5, 1925 to Edward Alton Dudley Sr. and Claire Dudley he was a native and life-long resident of Mobile. He attended Mobile public schools including: Russell, Barton, and Murphy High School where he graduated as Class President in 1943. Dr. Dudley continued his studies in Pre-Medicine at Springhill College and completed his medical degree from the University of Alabama Medical College on June 10, 1947. Upon completion of medical school where he received his training in Pediatrics he went to City Hospital in Mobile where he completed his internship June 30, 1948, and his residency June 30, 1949. On June 30, 1951, Dr. Dudley completed his Senior Pediatric Residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Dudley served as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the United States Army from 1950 until he was Honorably Discharged December 17, 1955. During his service in the United States Army, he served as a Medical Officer in the Korean War from July 1951 to July 1953. Dr. Dudley became certified by the American Board of Pediatrics on March 29, 1953, and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics on March 31, 1955.
Dr. Dudley was a co-founder of Pediatric Associates of Mobile from 1953 until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Dudley served as President of the Medical Staff of South Alabama Hospitals in 1976, and he was also a member of the medical staff of Mobile Infirmary, Providence and USA Hospitals. Dr. Dudley was a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Alabama School of Medicine. Often described as quiet and unassuming his giving spirit was shown while he served as the Co-Director and Volunteer for the Mobile Chapter of United Cerebral Palsy for over 40 years. Dr. Dudley served for five years on the Mobile Board Of Health’s Advisory Board and was a member of the Exchange Club and a Mobile Mystic Society for many years. Dr. Dudley was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
Dr. Dudley was married to the love of his life Alice Kurth for seventy years. He is survived by his daughters Karen Dudley Pittman (Kerry) and Cindy Dudley (Benson Bond); granddaughters Rone Pittman Walker (Bill) and Alice Pittman McCallum; great-grandchildren William Dudley Walker, Isabel Cora Walker, and Jaxon Payne McCallum.
The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice Care, Felisha Bagsby of Legacy Care, and Cathy Jones for her devoted care of Dr. Dudley. A special thank you to Semira Gredicek, for her many years of devotion to Dr. Dudley and his wife. Dr. Dudley had a true servants heart and left an impact on many families over his long career in Pediatrics. He is remembered fondly for his humility, patience, service to others, calmness, and intense love of his family.
A celebration of his life will be Monday, February 3, 2020 at St. Ignatius Church with visitation in the Marion Center beginning at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be held in the Old Springhill Cemetery on Dilston Lane.
Serving as pallbearers will be; Billy Seifert, Ross Seifert, David Hoyt, Bill Thames, Dr. George Hall, Dr. Charles Dyas, and Paul McCracken.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
