Edward Kent Ibsen, a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on November 24th. Over the years, Kent’s strong, rugged edges softened into a thoughtful, compassionate man whose deep sincerity and steadfast faith guided him daily. He often spoke of his prayer life with a humble certainty that revealed the tender heart beneath his hardworking exterior.
Kent was the son of a Danish immigrant—a heritage he treasured deeply. He carried forward the resilience, integrity, and strength passed down through generations. These qualities showed most clearly in his extraordinary gift for growing plants. Kent’s plants were a reflection of his spirit: patient, devoted, and filled with life. Even in recent months, he could be found tending to his plants, nurturing them with the same care he offered those he loved. Kent’s youngest son, Blake, now carries on the family’s horticultural legacy, which brought Kent immense pride and comfort.
Kent is survived by his three sons, Randy Smith (Pam), Drake Ibsen (Michelle), and Blake Ibsen. He is also survived by his children, Gayle Grabert and Kent Ibsen Jr., and his grandchildren, Marcie Grabert and Ken Ibsen, as well as a sister, Ann Johnson. Though life shaped each relationship differently, they remain part of his story and legacy.
He leaves behind his cherished sister-in-law, Gloria Williams. Kent was also a proud grandfather to Justin Smith (Ashley), Rick Newsome (Brittany), Tyler Smith, Cole Ibsen (Karstin), and Lennon Ibsen, and a great-grandfather to Lane Smith, Railey Smith, Alaina Smith, and Jaime Lynn Smith, Oakley Newsome, Jonathan Bodiford, and Reed Newsome.
Carolyn Ibsen, Kent’s beloved wife, preceded him in death, along with his parents, Preben and Ethel Ibsen, and his brother, Preben Ibsen. He was also preceded in death by many friends and family that were very special to him, such as his beloved brothers-in-law, Henry Williams (Cookie) and Darnell Smith.
Kent lived a colorful life, full of stories that painted vivid pictures of Old Mobile and tales of hunting and fishing trips in the Delta. He shared these memories with a spark in his eye.
Pallbearers are Danny Smith, Ronnie Berryhill, Justin Smith, Tyler Smith, Cole Ibsen, and Lane Smith.
A graveside service will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery on Monday, December 1st, at 10:00 am. Pine Crest Cemetery is located at 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL 36605.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a mission near and dear to Kent’s heart and one he faithfully supported.
