
Born in Cullman, Alabama, in 1915, she lived most of her life in Alabama with her husband of 54 years, the late Rev. William R. Hammock. A 1935 graduate of Auburn University, she spent the next decade working as a dietician in New York and in Alabama. After marrying in 1946, she raised three sons and was a dedicated pastor's wife at Baptist churches in Centerville, Abbeville and Phenix City, Alabama. In 1969, she began working for the State of Alabama as a social worker in what was then called the Department of Pensions and Security. After her retirement, she remained an active volunteer in the community and during the late 1980s, was named the Russell County volunteer of the year for her leadership in the community's Meals on Wheels program and other activities. She and her husband later moved to Mobile in 1990, where she became active in the Spring Hill Baptist Church, including teaching Sunday School for many years.
In addition to her husband, William Raymond Hammock, she was preceded in death by her parents, William Pugh and Marry Tupper (Powell) Wilks; two sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by a sister, Margaret Meigs; three sons and their wives, Ray and Sandra Hammock of Mobile, Roy and DeeDee Hammock of Daphne and Rex and Ann Hammock of Nashville; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Spring Hill Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 25, 2011, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, preceding the service in the chapel. Family burial will services will follow in Old Spring Hill Cemetery.
