Frank J Calagaz Jr, age 83, a native Mobilian, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2022. Frank was born November 23, 1939, in Mobile Alabama. Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years Ann Calagaz, father Frank J Calagaz Sr and Mother Beatrice Ursula Mattei Calagaz.
He is survived by his beloved children Pauline C McKean (Scott), Joe Calagaz (Wendy), and Tanya C Nelson (Bert), grandchildren Maegan Maloney (Dylan), Walt McKean, Courtney, Emily, and Gracie Calagaz, Sanden, and Mary Evan Nelson, two great grandchildren Beatrice and Ann Alice Maloney, his brothers Leo (Tina) and Charles (Patsy) Calagaz and many nieces and nephews.
Frank, a graduate of McGill Institute (’57), and Spring Hill College (’63) was commissioned into the US Army and with more than 34 years of combined active and National Guard of service, retired as a Colonel in 1999.
Frank was a devout Catholic and over the years was an active parishioner in several Catholic Parishes, Saint Pius X, Christ the King, and Corpus Christi. Frank also served on the Arch Diocese deacon advisory board for many years. Frank was knighted into The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, one of six orders of knighthood in the Catholic Church founded in 1099 during the first crusade.
Frank followed his father into the family business and in spite of significant changes to the Photo Industry, he continued to build Calagaz Photo into the staple of our business community that it is today. Calagaz Photo has endured for over 67 years.
A visitation for Frank will be held Thursday, December 15, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St., Mobile, AL 36606. The Rosary will be at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be Friday, December 16, 2022, at 9:30 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1505 Main St., Daphne, AL 36526.
