Fred attended Michigan Technological University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He later received a master’s degree from the Lawrence Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin. Prior to his military service, he interned with Scott Paper, where he would ultimately spend 28 years before retiring.
Fred proudly served five years in the United States Army, the final three of which were stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Rosemary Brascher, his devoted wife of 63 years. He was honorably discharged on the very day of their wedding.
After retiring from Scott Paper, Fred embraced a full and active daily routine. His days often began with morning coffee and conversation with friends at local favorites such as Colonel Dixie and Carpe Diem, followed by exercise and social time at the Sportplex. Lunch was frequently shared with his close-knit group of friends at Big Time Diner, after which he returned home to enthusiastically tackle home improvement projects.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Lorene Dunwell, and his brother-in-law, Bill Feyerharm. In addition to his wife, Rosemary, he is survived by his children: Frederick “Rick” Dunwell; Lorene “Lori” Fechner (Steve); and Daniel “Danny” Dunwell (Tanya); nine grandchildren: Sam Dunwell, Will Dunwell, Emily Fechner, Camille Fechner, Tess Fechner, Nicholas Dunwell, Ben Dunwell, Sr. Victoria Christi Dunwell, O.P., and Stewart Dunwell; his sister, Ann Feyerharm; her children, Libby and Rob; as well as other beloved relatives and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Retreat and Saad Hospice Care for their compassionate care and support of Fred, Rosemary, and their family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Murphy Center at St. Dominic Catholic Church on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
