George Byron Schwall passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his loving wife and son by his side on Thursday, January 28, 2016, after a long and heroic battle with leukemia. George was born January 16, 1939 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania and was preceded in death by his parents, George and Viola Schwall and sister Nancy Macarty. He lived his early years in Pennsylvania and Florida before settling in Mobile, Alabama in 1973. George is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 43 years, Virginia “Gigi” Cooper Schwall. Also surviving him are a son, Lee (Cathy) Schwall of Mobile, Alabama and daughter, Lori Schwall of Georgia, grandchildren, Chris (Harlan) Schwall, Dana (Eric) McCall and Tyler Schwall of Mobile, Alabama and great-grandsons, Alexander and Harrison McCall and Quinn Schwall of Mobile, Alabama and sister Janis (Eddie) Carey of Pinehurst, NC.
George served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, joining in 1956, and being honorably discharged in 1964. During his time in the Air Force he supported the launches of both Alan Shepard (sub-orbital) and John Glenn’s (first orbital) flights from the old Cape Canaveral launch area. Following his service George was part of the Kennedy Space Center Team that launched Apollo 11 on our nation’s first trip to the moon. George was a part of the Space Industry from 1958 to 1972. From 1973 until he retired in 2003 he was employed by Ingalls Shipbuilding as a Program Office Logistic Project manager traveling extensively serving the U. S. Naval fleet. George always said that he had the “best job” at the shipyard.
Since retiring, George and Gigi have enjoyed traveling around the USA and Canada in their motorhome “Gypsy”. They are members of the Emerald Koast Sandpipers out of Pensacola, Florida and are also member of the Good Sam Club and the Newmar Kountry Klub motorhome group. Words cannot adequately express the happiness the RV “lifestyle” brought to George and Gigi’s retirement years. We’re hoping there are motorhomes in heaven so that this happiness can continue. A Bluejean Celebration of Life will be held at his beloved home “Brierwood” on Sunday, February 14, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. ROLL TIDE!!! In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Alabama/Gulf Coast Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org/alabamagulf-coast.
Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com
