

Geraldine Acome Stevens, age 103, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in Mobile. Geraldine was born in South Glens Falls, NY in 1910. She was the oldest of three daughters and worked during the depression in a nursing home, made jewelry, and baked goods for sale upon request. After graduating from South Glens Falls Central School in 1929, she found employment at Glens Falls Insurance Company, Imperial, and The Economy Store. In 1932, she married Raymond Stevens and resided in Glens Falls. They gave birth to two children, Gary and Donna. In 1959 Ray was transferred to the Scott Paper Plant located in Mobile, AL. As a family, they relocated down South. Following Ray's death in 1967, Geraldine began work as a cashier at Hammel's and DH Holmes. At the age of 83, she retired from her position as head cashier at Dillard's. During her retirement, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. At one point she made teddy bears for the entire kindergarten class at Baker Elementary School. She also enjoyed canning vegetables, planting flowers, maintaining her lawn, and remained an actively involved mother, grandmother and great grandmother throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents William J. and Nettie Acome and her beloved husband Raymond J. Stevens, two sisters, Joyce Parsons and Pearl O'Keefe and nephew Royal Parsons. She is survived by her son, Gary R. (Dr. Gail) Stevens and her daughter, Donna S. Costa; five grandchildren, Edward (Lisa) Costa, III, Ginelle (Christopher) Jones, Gavin (Maureen) Stevens, Gordon (Rhonda) Stevens and Marci (Jason) Jones; seven great grandchildren, Raymond Jones, Edward Costa, IV, Kathryn Stevens, Kileigh Jones, Shelby Stevens, Wesley Stevens and Nathan Jones; and special friends, Jeff and Kay Gray, Bill and Laurie Flagge, Catherine Hudson, Charlene Bishop, Mary Callaghan, Arleigh Rigby, Larry Funk, Maurice Richardson, Edward O'Keefe, W. Boyd Reeves, Janet Lee, Peggy Pehler, Margaret Evans, Charles Grubbs, David (Cloe & Zora) Rich, past & present employees of Hammel's, DH Holmes, and Dillard's and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held from the Chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 12 noon with visitation starting at 11 AM. Pallbearers for the ceremony will be Edward Costa III, Gavin Stevens, Gordon Stevens, Jason Jones, Keith Barlar, and Danny Bishop. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Kingswood United Methodist Church, 5200 Perin Rd., Mobile. Burial to follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Our family greatly appreciates the professional treatment, concern, and care of our Mom by Doctor Stephen Reeves Dill and Cogburn Nursing and Rehab staff at Grelot Road West.
